Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

Looks like UPC Ireland are upgrading their 20Mbit down 1.5Mbit up customers to 30Mbit down 3Mbit up on January 4th next year.

More scarily they only announced it a couple of weeks ago. Disgraceful really, I want Virgin style announcements that upgrades will be happening in 9 months.

They are apparently hoping to have 120Mbps down and 10Mbps up available by mid next year in some areas.

Perhaps you may find a quicker result in your quest in a third world country as the rest of Europe seems to be way ahead of VM

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

Hah. We're not that bad downstream actually, it's the contrast between down and up that's the scary part. Over 30:1 on the 50Mbit - not too hot but hopefully to be changed in the not too distant future.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

I agree the downstream is not bad but VM have never really cared about up speeds. Once they sort all the problems out with the 50Mb I'll upgrade to it.

I keep wondering though why they don't or can't do the same as Be ie trade off some downstream for another Meg up. I think plenty of users would jump at it.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

Well it is happening 'soon'. BT are starting to roll out 10Mbps upstreams and VM will be wanting to keep that 'fastest' thing going so no choice.

Will keep the network and headend engineers busy getting that done

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

I can see major headaches ahead then as they can't even seem to sort out the 50Mb connection as it is without the added up speed.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

I know that VM are using DOCSIS 3 for 50mbit customers, but couldn't DOCSIS 1 & 2 achieve 10mbit up? I am not a geek so don't know too much about this stuff.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

DOCSIS 2 is capable of producing 10Mbit up, DOCSIS 1/1.1 which VM use at present on upstream cannot deliver this.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

I torrent quite a bit and like to give back at least as much as i download. I'd like a bigger upload too even if it was to backup large files online which we get for free but cant be bothered to use as it takes far to long to complete at such slow rates.

Didn't we see a 10Mb config file that a customer is now using?

Yes, done with a DOCSIS 2 upstream though. It will happen of course just a question of when.

I think that sums up VM Broadband in a nutshell. They constantly throw resource at headline grabbers rather than sorting out their existing network. They dive headlong into a 50Mb rollout before they've even got reliable bottom tier 2Mb connections sorted, and you can bet they'll be jumping in to faster upload speeds before they've sorted out 50Mb stability.

They keep borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.
