As no upgrade amount or date has been specified yet, not for a long while.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

The rumour mill here seems to suggest that 5mbit upload rate might be on the cards. Realisitcally taking into account the state of the network, how high could they upgrade the upload rate? Would 10mbit be too much? How about 7.5mbit? Would 7.5mbit be pushing it too far?

Given network will need upgrade in a lot of areas to do 5 a better question is how much they want to spend upgrading the network in order to upgrade the upload.

Another probably more relevant question is what kind of things will be brought in to control usage on these upgraded upstream speeds as going by past experience it would seem extremely unlikely that this upgrade will come without conditions, be they some excessive usage policy or STM or even protocol shaping.

The more they spend the higher it can go, the more they bring in additional controls the higher it can go.

Strange you say that broadbandings (protocol shaping) VM was up in arms a while ago saying they don't have plans to use DPI traffic shaping and now they are going to use CView which as I understand is DPI which will help VM shape traffic.

Not in itself it won't however certainly the data CView provides would be valuable to VM in producing future policy including justifying shaping of certain protocols. If most identifiable BT traffic is dubious, which of course we know it is it's a quite tempting target. VM get to keep their 'unlimited' label, offer higher speeds and save money on upgrades. The rumour mill already rumbles indicating that the scope of the upgrades required has freaked people out and the budget either has been lowered or isn't going to be adequate or both.

Wouldn't take many of these monsters to do the job quite adequately.

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

Ok I can imagine them trying to target bittorrent traffic, but do you think they would use traffic shaping on ftp uploads/downloads? I have a dedicated server and access it by ftp and sftp quite a bit. So far as I am concerned ftping shouldn't be traffic shaped as I and other people use it for good legit reasons.

Meanwhile, in OL8 Openreach have been setting up new green boxes and fabricating pits everywhere and last week new cable was being fed through the main ducts.
Interesting times ahead.....

If the trails are finishing then hopefully it shouldn't be too long till the upgrades are officially rolled out then. :-)

Re: Upload Speed for 50Mb when it being upgraded

probably a far fetched question but does anyone know If there was any problems if VM would keep the trials up an running to resolve it? Or (although iknow it's only one person so far) but the fact people are reporting it going back to original speed means all is ok?

Sorry, iknow, iknow a stable upload is better than an unstable one that we can have now but I'm inpatient

Really all I can say is that they tested me up to 5Mb using one channel although they did lift my top possible rate up to 10Mb. I believe that others got tested on 10Mb.

My experience was good. Throughout the trial I always got 4Mb+ occasionally hitting 5Mb right up until yesterday.

My guess is that the trial went OK. I also got asked through a Samknows/VM questionnaire if I would be prepared to pay extra for 5Mb or 10Mb. The maximum they suggested was £10.00.

I am still using the Samknows trial kit they sent me. I'll be glad to get rid of that because it only handles 100Mb, when my gear is all 1000Mb. It does reduce HD video performance around the house.

Yeah, its not long now is it? I just got a gigabit switch handling the HD stuff, although its generally under 100mbps anyway for me :/

Anybody else here on the upload trial gone back to normal speed?
