Slow Speeds in Selly Oak Birmingham B29

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty sure this is just a really oversubscribed UBR but posting in the hope of some advice.

My speed is 92Kbps on a 20 Mbps plan. It as always been this slow between 4PM and 4AM but recently the problem has occurred almost all the time.

Modem signal levels:
Downstream: 1.2 dBmV
Upstream: 39 dBmV

which seem normal. What points to the UBR is that a traceroute times out on the second hop (the first out of the 192.168.*.*). The area is full of university students and clearly oversubscribed, has anyone else experienced similar?

Would newsgroups be better to try and get to 2nd support first or slog it through the full on phone support?

Cheers.

Please don't blame students for you slow internet, it's not our fault; it's VM (and it's predecessor's) fault for overselling. I live in a virtually exclusive student area and the speed is excellent. Students /= slow internet.

The easiest way to find out your UBR utilisation is to post a friendly request on the virginmedia.support.broadband.cable newsgroup: http://www.virginmedia.com/help/cable/newsgroups/

Re: Slow Speeds in Selly Oak Birmingham B29

It's the same at our house, we're on the 20mb broadband package. The internet has always been average (8 -10mb) never 20mb. But since I got back from the Easter holiday it has been utter rubbish. Acheving about 1 - 2mb in the daytime, and even at 1am - 3am still only getting about 4 - 5mb. When I called they told me there was a general fault in the area, but the more I read about VM, the more I think he told me that, to get me off the line.

Is there anything that I can do myself to increase the speed? Living in a 7 bed house means that 1 - 2mb does not go far.

Thank in advance.
