Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

can your mac see the wireless network from the netgear? or can you browse to the router interface (something like http://192.168.1.1) and check the settings there.

otherwise it might just be a dead router.

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

Manual Set up with the Virgin router on a Mac

Do a factory reset so first ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a small round hole big enough for the pen to go into press the reset button in this hole for approx 10 seconds then switch off the router and modem

1. Connect to wireless network. The network will be called "Virgin Broadband" the passphrase (WPA key) is preinstall.

2. Open a web browser. You will be presented with a setup page. Enter a new network name and password, ignore everything else, click apply. You will be prompted for a username and password - ignore it and close the browser.

3. Connect to the wireless network using you new network name and passphrase.

4. Happy surfing.

---------------------------

If the above does not work try the instructions below.

Do a pinhole reset first.

connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.

disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected.

---------------------------

If you still get no connection call Tech Support as the routr may be faulty.

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

If you look at the back of the router, between the yellow port and the aerial there is a small grid of squares.
Closer inspection and you'll see one is actually a circle, this is the reset, you'll need push either a pen, paperclip or some other form of pointy object in there for approx 10 secs.

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

Virgin support Mac users for a wired connection - just not with the Wireless router (yet)

---------- Post added at 19:01 ---------- Previous post was at 19:00 ----------

Probably because most of them go 'Oh I don't want your router, I have an Apple one'

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

well they sd not supply Mac users with a router then and charge them for it! I was told by support staff in India they wd solve issue, promised a phone call, no one called. I called them and they changed tune said there was no official support. No consistency at all.

And then leave us in the ****

As BenMcr implied, there is no support as yet for the router -setup- . However, routers are agnostic about the machines downstream of them. The simplest explanation is a hardware failure of the wireless circuitry. It happened to me with a Belkin and everything else continued to work perfectly.

Do the pinhole reset and count to 15 and then follow the above instructions it should work.

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

I have posted this elsewhere but in case anyone else struggling try this:

When you're swapping from a direct connection to the modem to
putting a
router in between it and Mac you need to be sure to power cycle
(switch
on and off) everything in the right order. You only need to follow
those
instructions when you're moving from a direct connection to the
modem to a
connection with a different device in between modem and Mac (or when
you
change that device).

In short you need to reboot the modem by unplugging it from the
mains and
plugging it back in while it is connected to the other device:

Try these steps:
1. Power off and disconnect everything; Mac, router/hub/and modem
2. Connect all devices together via Ethernet cables; a cable from
the modem
to the hub/wireless router and one to the Mac
3. Power on the modem;
4. Wait 5 minutes;
5. Power on the router/hub
6. Wait 5 minutes;
7. Power on the computer.

For wireless follow the instructions above then run Airport Utility
and use
as Create a new wireless network as you probably know.

Re: Virgin Media + Applemac + Netgear WGR614 v9

Hi, I am one of the many people having big problems trying to set up virgin media wireless network using the netgear router they provided me with.I followed all the instructions on the previous posts and manage to get to the router sign in box where I entered my chosen SSID and password. Then I pressed Apply and closed the window.
I went into system preferences and tried to use network set up assistant but it could not find the wireless network I named. Can't find it using Airport either. Network diagnostics also can't help.

Please can someone help???
