I know but I'm a stubborn bugger so I'm going to try anyway. Increased monthly rental is fine, we were even planning on the upgrade if possible before we started having problems, but an extended contract is impossible for me to accept as I outlined above and I'm not going to pay setup fees just because VM can't provide me with an adequate service.
Yes, I know my chances are small to zero, but what I really want to know is whether even in a hypothetical situation I would end up with a better service. Downgrading isn't an option in my eyes either, I'd rather ring up every month and get a compensation payment from CS, at least that way I can get quick speeds at obscure times.

"in a hypothetical situation I would end up with a better service"
yes, you may as you will have to be issued a new DS3 modem, but more important, moved to a UBR that is DS3 50Mbit card enabled, assuming your house/area is currently active and taking DocSis3 customers right now OC....
in effect the DS3 is a virtually seperate network on a different fibre light source going down the same wire so your not likely to be over subscribed etc as yet on there.....
now paying for the hidden £50 11n wireless router fee + £30 re-activation fee =total £80 for the official VM DS3 installation fee is another matter all together OC

So pay less for a better service. I downgraded to 2 meg and it's been rock solid stable ever since.

Thing is, most of the time it's not awful, and it only dips below usable on rare occasions. It's just annoyingly slow, considering how much it costs, and considering the vast number of competing ISPs. Plus, I like having that 20Mbps kick when we actually get to use it.

Rik,
I am also in Hemel but on cpc3-hem17-0-0-cust***.lutn.cable.ntl.com.
My street cab is so clogged up, every 6 months or so I lose service cause they removed me to put in the last guy to lose service! When I call them out, they remove the guy who lost service 6 months ago!
I would have lost my rag if I wasn't laughing my head off.
Waiting to get 50Mb but undecided if I'll take it yet.....OK just kidding, I'm a speed and tech freak - if I'm not first I get upset

How comes on the 50mb FAQ It says you can download a 5gb HD movie in about an hour ...?
I can download the same amount now on 20mb in 30 minutes.
How long can you Really download 5gb in ?

No you can't, because STM will hit before you have a chance to keep up the full speed. It's still false opaque advertising IMO, but those who pay £50-odd for a 50Mbit-ish connection should know what to expect. If I wanted that much, I'd pay for a leased line at 100Mbit, or go to the university for my download sprees.

No STM on 50Mb as yet because it would stop potential customers signing up.

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
It's not only that - 50Mbit is such a step up (along with DOCSIS 3) that Virgin probably haven't got enough usage date to predict if/when/how much STM may be needed (if any)

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
Here we are debating 50 mb, when I consistently get 55 mb. Here is my best result so far.
The ping is rubbish though. I get a 9 ms at BBc.co.uk.

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
well i did think this was a lil cheap for what were getting and i did question it but she said thats the price....perhaps she was doing me a solid or something i dont know maybe its cus i went to hell and back just to get them to wave the installation fee, i cant have mine installed during the week so they said i had to have a saturday delivery and install which would be double the standard £30, i was no pleased. they also said i had to wait until the 26th of april for an engineer to be available. i finally got them to just to send me the modem via courier for wednesday. :-) no install fee. all i have to do is ring em up wednesday to register the new modem. But yes i got it all for 50.25.
