OC potentially, every single end user thats got an NTL255/VM250 DS2.0a chipset will at some point be transfered to the new DS2.0b/DS3.0 infrastructure to take advantage of its DS2 bandwidth savings, remember VM or those before them dont and didnt use DS2 only DS1.0/1.1

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?

I just rang VM for a price, on my package.

Currently I get XL tv XL phone and XL BB, to change to XXL BB it would be an extra £10 per month, and as I'm currently doing the 50 MB Pilot there wouldnt be an installation fee.

he means the new infrastructure, they can then finally take advantage of, and start using the old DS2.0a on the backward compatable DS2.0b/DS3.0 UBR cards and related kit etc....

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?

I wasn't really interested in getting 50mbit, but seeing they have said the cost is £35 + £11 phone line then it's a no brainer seeing i'm paying £37 + £11 a month at the moment. This is assuming it doesn't mess up my lifetime loyalty with TV XL.

54Mbps will do max 6.75MB transfer but like CAPH said divide this by two or three due to interference, walls, dect phones, microwaves etc...

Wireless N claims 300Mbps more like 150Mbps so maximum would be

300Mbps = 37.5 megabytes / second
150Mbps = 18.75 megabytes / second

Again divide these numbers by 2/3.

I have a Belkin wireless N router and can only achieve 6-8 mb/s in the same room as the router.

Thanks

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?

ok, here is point. Their arguement all along has been despite the fact that us 20mbit dudes only account for 9% of the customer base, apparently we account for 95% of the bandwidth usage which is their justification for stm'ing us. So if we are going to move all 50mbit, 20 and 10 onto docsis you are going to leave the existing docsis 1 network with the the 2mbit users on it who apparently don't do anything. Aren't we just going to have the same problem on docsis 3? I thought it would be better to have the 2's and 10's on docsis 1 and the 20s and 50s on docsis 3. Leave the "premium" service customers with the premium bandwidth.

dont know were your pulling these No's from, but it also seems your not just getting the No wrong, your also mixing up your Mbits (8 bits to the byte)and MBytes, and throwing in a mibibit at the end too just to confuse people even more.

all the kit we are talking about here is always stated in Mbit/s speeds.

we are talking REAL life tryed and tested speeds here.
generic 11b = 11Mbit/s real speeds MAX
generic 11g = 22Mbit/s Real speeds MAX (with all security turned off)
generic 11n = 60Mbit+ at least Real speeds

its not rocket science, keep it Mbit/s and you cant go wrong

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?

just phoned vm cs and asked about the 50mb service which is not in my area yet, but that was not why i phoned i wanted to find out first hand how much extra i would have to pay.
i'm currently on the vip pack when the cs rep looked into it he came back and said that because i'm on the vip pack the price would go up by £10 ok so far (that's what i've read) but then came the crunch he said but unfortunatly you would no longer be on the vip pack so my other services would go up to there proper value as at present they are heavily discounted for the vip service.
if that is the case i won't be going onto the 50mb service

Will docsis 3 put an end to dodgy modems outputting 10 and 20mb once they have moved over to it?

Phoned up, added to the account within a few minutes.

The woman had no clue about the new modem though, which is worrying.
