You divide wireless speed by between 2 and 3 to get actual throughput (usually nearer 3 in practice). So a 54Mbit wireless connection will only give you about 20Mbit throughput.

You'd think VM had taken something away or were forcing people to take the service looking at the comments here. It's an extra choice that isn't available anywhere else, unless you fancy moving in with Traxdata v.3 and no speed increase would be worth that.

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
Facts are this for me.
I'm currently on VIP (their words not mine) and getting 'up to (tm)' 20mb.
1. When I see 20mb regularly I might consider the upgrade, typically I get between 3mb and 10mb, about 4am I think I can get 20mb for a few minutes.
2. Surely being capped with 'fair usage' means at 50mb you just get kicked down to 3-5mb even faster?
Sorry for the cynicism VM but I have been here since NTL and I have plenty of T-Shirts now. Will pass till they offer it free with XL packages, and they will at some point, until then, we all really know we are not missing much, even if we are it wont be for more than 20 minutes a day.
P.S. Loved the video interview on the BBC news site where the VM big-wig has one person on BBCi and another 'Householder' on a game. Allowing the family to embed themselves in rich content... That is erm, till you hit the cap! Yes, you get all this for two hours a day if your lucky!

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
Like said previously, choice is wonderfull. You do not have to take 50meg, if the upload speed is more important than download then take a product from another provider.
You cant really argue what is a better product, 24meg from bethere or virgins 50meg relative to pricing / performance.
With regards to using a wireless G router, i have the LInksys WRT54G, whiich is a fantastic piece of kit. However, 54Mbps is theoretical maximum, the only way to achieve this would mean sitting laptop next to router and running wireless, even then 50meg speeds may not be achievable.
I do however think that the charges for activation are likely to be due to the router, however the choice should be left with the consumer. (Id rather buy my own W/l N)

Its a tech install only at the moment. Might become self install next year

Then swap your phone service to Virgin and only pay £46 for the two

I am interested to know about whether they will charge for an engineer visit as the wording they use implies this is included withing the premium service.
|
Its £50 activation and £30 engineer install fee

therefore routers CAN offer full speed so that argument is also redundant. The router may not give you full speed depending on the signal and distance, but you cant guarantee Wireless N would either so you should offer both routers to customers.
You offer 10mb upload for business customers, why not end users? we didnt say it has to be £9.99 a month, we'll pay a premium price for 20mb down and 10mb up with no restrictions!

many people make the same mistake your making, your generic 11g wireless router can only give a MAX of 22 Mbit/s throughput at best..., and thats if you turn off virtually all the security options so the internal CPU can cope with the wireless traffic, your more likely to infact get around the 15Mbit/s rates with your average secure options turned on etc...
also its Mbit ps(Megabit=1024) not mbit ps (mibibit=1000bits)
were as all the current 11n wireless routers on the market do at LEAST 60Mbit/s throughput when your matched to 11n wireless ethernet adaptors...
so they are a reasonable match to the new package, plus their internal CPUs are far more powerful and can cope with your security settings etc far better at these far faster speeds...
many 11n also have 1000meg/1gig router/switch ports, rather than the older 10/100 as found on your 11g router.
although VM making you pay a £50 and calling it a connection fee, to actually cover the costs of these 11n routers your supposedly getting free as part of the new service , is a rather low trick to fool your average end users....

Re: Virgin's 50Mb broadband arriving December 15?
Don't know about you guys, but Im not going to be paying for something which should be in my eyes free if your paying 50 quid a month, at a time like this, I dont think many people are going to purchase this new service straight away
seeing as I am an existing customer, it sounds silly to be paying 50 quid when my house is activated for bb anyway, dont mind the engineer fee though

Only the 20MB is transfering to DOCSIS 3. 2MB and 10MB are staying where they are.

When you say 20mb is transfering to docsis 3 do you mean the equipment, otherwise wouldn't all 20mb need new modems ?

Thanks for the update, have i missed something when i read Neil Berketts annoucement which states...
"The upgraded network means significant improvements to the service received by all of Virgin Media’s broadband customers, with current 10Mb and 20Mb users being moved onto the new “DOCSIS3” network(5), freeing up capacity for increased traffic on the existing DOCSIS 1.0 network."
The (5) variable i cannot see though, could anyone update me on what this is referencing?
Cheers

They aren't supposed to, and when ever I have had techs around they always put on those cover things on their boots when in the house.

What I meant was that the 10MB won't be transfering soon. At most once the 50MB is nationwide and then they start the transfer of the 20MB once that has been done the 10MB will probably move over but that will be more than a year away at least.
