We seem to be suffering from Chinese whispers here. The real message is getting corrupted by half read / half understood comments passed on by half-cocked comment makers.

I guess we are going to have to wait until the first regular users actually get their 50 mb connection. Meanwhile why not register your interest at the availability check and await VM's reply.

jcuk clearly works for virgin lol. You are on about getting a wireless N router which first of all will be draft 2.0 at best and there is no guarantee it will work with final n 1.0 spec, 2nd of all double the speed over be means nothing when you are throttled from 10am to midnight, 3rd thing the upload speed is slower than be's, which is FAR more important for most people, but virgin doesnt want people uploading torrents which is why they give such awful upload speeds.

charging £50 for a call centre worker to change your subscription to 50mb is a joke, connection fee is fine as long as the engineer tests your line and configures the frequencies but £50 ontop of the engineer £30 is a joke.

Make a 20mb tier with 10mb upload and unthrottled and i'll subscribe but you clearly dont want to give customers what they want, you just want to give your shareholders what they want.

Also the router isnt to keep, its leased. I wouldn't even want it anyway, i'd rather have my linksys wrt54gs with DD-WRT firmware installed, far more secure and stable and feature rich than any off the shelf router. Why not charge people less if they dont want the router and wireless receiver usb pen?

I have just caught up with the posts from a couple of hours ago. I use the term "cap" loosely although you have technically differentiate between terms if you want to. I understand that cap, restriction, stm etc are all different, my point was that we are paying a premium price for a premium service which VM has supposedly done the upgrades for, so no excuses and quibbling over terminology, i want an unrestricted 50mbit connection, i think we are all paying enough for it.

Second, There is no STM on the service at the moment, and no information on what it may be when it is introduced.

It was probably a choice of either a £50 activation fee or higher monthly charges.

correct, if virgin have spent all this money "apparently" upgrading their networks and services then there should be plenty of bandwidth to remove restrictions from all tiers, oh no wait there is extra capacity because you throttle us from 10am till midnight, ahhhh i see where the extra capacity came from now!

Enough of the lying VM, your network is oversubscribed and under funded and giving less than 1/30th of the download speed for the upload speed is a slap in the face to us the customers who arent that bothered about 50mb as there is very little content on the internet that will download faster than 20mb except for microsoft servers. Its all just a gimmick for the uneducated customers who see 50mb and go wooooww, i'll buy that, then you realise after a few mins of download and full speed you are throttled to 5mb for countless hours and bound by a 12 month contract so cant get out of it.

Unless you couldn't are less about getting 50mb over wireless as all you use that for is browsing, and only care if you get the full speed wired.

I'd much rather use a wrt54g than any bundled router as most of them could only dream of having the features you get with the custom firmware on the wrt54g's. As long as I'd be getting 50mb on the wired connections the wireless ones can get 1mbit for all I care as I only use that for surfing from the sofa.

As for keeping my wireless g router i barely ever use my wireless, they can be hacked so easily, even with dd-wrt firmware, i use ethernet, far more reliable and secure, i only use wireless for my laptop now and again if i need to email some ppl whilst watching tv in the other room, i use the desktop for downloading and uploading.

Just make a tier which is unrestricted, 10mb upload, no connection fee, wireless g or n router for free if the user wants it it and 20mb download, i think the vast majority of ppl would want this, instead you try and got the middle aged mums interested in the flashy "fibre-optic" "super speedy" advertising to get it for their teenage kids. Have a tier for us educated computer users!

Yes there will be, at some point in the future. Times, trigger amounts, length of time etc has yet to be decided on

54G = 54mbps
50mb virgin = 50mbps

therefore routers CAN offer full speed so that argument is also redundant. The router may not give you full speed depending on the signal and distance, but you cant guarantee Wireless N would either so you should offer both routers to customers.

You offer 10mb upload for business customers, why not end users? we didnt say it has to be £9.99 a month, we'll pay a premium price for 20mb down and 10mb up with no restrictions!

yep, im sure existing customers could do a self-install, surely the frequencies wont need changing? any virgin engineers awake to enlighten us? Hi all,

Interesting debate going on since the release of the new service. Personally i hated the new traffic management and i can see the benefits of downloading and i presume virgin want those peoplw who do download to be forced into paying more. Cable has always been a premium service but £51 is just too much i am going to wait for a price drop.

I am interested to know about whether they will charge for an engineer visit as the wording they use implies this is included withing the premium service.
