host name
Is there anyway to hide it?
the host name is a string of data, that identifies you on the Internet similar to the IP. eg.
cpc4-****-0-0-cust411.****.cable.ntl.com
edit. hide the host name, rather than change

Re: host name
I'm not sure. Does the cust411 bit ever change? If not I could have just found my own solution to DDNS aswell.

Re: host name
Why would you need to change it?

Re: host name
I think that cust no. is fixed
I don't like that information being available on the internet for others to see. In the wrong hands it could give away your address.

Re: host name
Only to a VM employee and I think they already have access to your address

As Kymmy said, only a VM employee could find your address with that information and even if that were change the same could be said for your IP address which definitely cannot be changed.

Re: host name
Due to problems of over-subscription my Host name has changed 4 times this year resulting in a different customer number each time.

But it's still linked identically to your account.

Re: host name
Not all VM employees can access IP data. hiding your host name has little effect, because it is linked to a dynamically assigned IP address, each address having a slightly different hostname from the other.

Our tools tend not to show the customer number as shown above as all we need is the MAC address of the modem to access account details which in turn tells us what uBR and cable you are on and if you are online.
The above number would show up if we did a nslookup of the IP address, you can try this via http://tools.virginmedia.com/

http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp
They know where you live. (Well, vaguely, got me to within 20 miles)
There seems to be some confusion here I assumed the OP was referring to an actual address, not an ip address, pretty much all VM employees have access to that...
I have always thought People are a bit paranoid about ip addresses - people don't generally try to find ip addresses and then try to hack them - they will scan ranges of ip addresses looking for known vulnerabilities, unless you are an obvious target, like a bank, they are unlikely to target you because they found your ip address.

Your (un)lucky. I just entered my IP and the cross hairs pointed to somewhere west of London. Pity I live South East of london.

Re: host name
That site quite rightly identifies that I am on the Baguley server but reckons I am located in Reading. As I am in Manchester that's about 150 miles out. I hope they never allocate an engineer to visit me based on that site.
