Motorola 5100 SURFboard. The modem is wired to the router, and I have my laptop wireless. But up to 8 days ago, my speeds were fine. I was getting my full 4mb speeds during the day and getting 3+ during the night.

Sounds like we might be in the same boat. Have you tried calling VM and talking to them about it yet?

My post on a similar topic.

Give me a bell if you manage to resolve it, will ya?

Since you're using a router, you might want to try connecting your computer directly to the modem and see if that helps your speeds any.

Also a solid piece of advice seems to be to try downloading a large file from here. See if you get your usual speeds; might help to pin the problem down some.

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.

Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.

What I want you to post is the Downstream and the Upstream plus what model the modem is for me thanks.

DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And in order to check your speed use this link below, if you call in they will ask you to run this as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB

I'm on the Motorola 5100 SURFboard.

Here's the information that shows up:

Downstream Value
Frequency 331000000 Hz

Signal To Noise Ratio 38.2 dB

Power Level 0.6 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 34000000 Hz
Power 51.5 dBmV

I don't know if that's any help to you.

---------- Post added at 17:45 ---------- Previous post was at 17:41 ----------

And when I downloaded one of those games, I got an average of 21kbps after a few minutes.

Re: I've had enough of these speeds!

Those levels are fine for an ex telewest connection. The upstream frequency is more of an NTL frequency, usually the U/S frequency is lower than the downstream.

You may want to check out the wikipedia page on HFC networks. That's not 'more of an ntl frequency' and it's not higher than the downstream nor could it possibly be. No cable network in the UK has upstream higher than the downstream band. The wikipedia page will help you understand why.

Reread you'll see the upstream frequency is 34MHz, downstream being Telewest first downstream standard 331MHz.
