Uber slow speeds after 4pmish

For the last two days on the trot, my broadband connection speeds have dropped REAL low to the point where it's unusuable
At first I thought it was traffic management, but the speeds I'm getting are much, much slower than that

I'm on the 20mb connection and right now, my top download speed is about 100kb/second

Bearing in mind this connection is shared between 3 users, it makes for....interesting web browsing (think sub Dial up, heh)

The download speeds are the same regardless of which site(s) I use, or where I download from
For instance it's taken 20 odd seconds to load Cableforum up

Using giganews servers with 20 connections and I'm getting a pitiful 117kb/second.

Anyone else having problems in the worthing area?

Cable modem downstream info

Re: Uber slow speeds after 4pmish

I'm guessing the modem is an Ambit 250, 255, 256, due to the way its set out. But yeah we do need the upsream power level. Though im guessing its its after 4, it could be over subscribtion.

Try this as it the only speed test that Virgin accept.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the link below.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files around 400/500 mb and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running > times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB

If thats correct your getting 2mb considering you said your on 20mb so that is less than STM for your speed.

Do you have Internet Explorer as gamefiles actually runs better in there and try to open as many files as you can and then list the transfer rates and times by 8 again.

Re: Uber slow speeds after 4pmish

Adam, have you checked the configuration on your modem to see if you are configured for 20Mbit or if for some reason you've a 2Mbit config file?

Just seems a bit of a coincidence that you are pegged to 2Mbit.

If you are on 20mb it should look like this below.

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000
