Do I need a modem upgrade?

Hi I'm in the Cambridge which I believe was upgraded from 4mb to 10mb recently(?). I'm getting extremely slow speeds sometimes (only about 20~30KB down) and this is only fixed by resetting the modem, it works for about 10 hours then goes slow again. I tried resetting the router by itself too but that makes no difference.

I have not been using p2p or downloading that much recently..

modem: NTL:100
router: Belkin F5D5230-4

Thanks for any help.

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

Nope. You need a new router, I'm afraid.

Despite the F5D230-4's WAN port being rated at 10Mb/s (10baseT), it doesn't seem to be able to handle it in practice.
See Hornet's questions on page 2 of this thread.

Good luck!

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

If it's the router why does resetting the modem cure it when resetting the router doesn't?

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

TimIX,
After having slow download speeds since last week, I spoke to VM tech, who said my cable modem was too old (NTL 100) to work with the 10M upgrade and ordered a replacement (which arrived today, although I can't connect it yet 'cos 'some database is down') but, anyway, it looks as though you're in the same boat.

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

Maby its possible both the router and modem need upgrading? I was thinking about getting a gigabit router anyway just because our LAN is slow.

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

By the sounds of things that router does struggle, and there does seem to be a problem with that modem as well.

It certainly can't hurt to upgrade both, especially if you were considering getting a new router anyway

Re: Do I need a modem upgrade?

If you've any doubts, why not get VM to replace the modem first and then consider a new router if the speed / crashes don't improve?

Good luck!

Thanks for any help.
That is an old modem and will be getting a bit tired now.

Ring Tech Support and tell them your problems and they should replace your modem.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:
Call Product Support/Faults on 151 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.
Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.
