Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
10/100 will be the LAN ports, not the WAN port in this case. You wont see 10mb on there for sure. Most routers you buy nowadays will have simple setup guides on them. All new routers will have 100mb WAN ports.
I prefere Belkin personally but others prefere Netgear and Linksys. You pays your money etc etc

The 4 wired LAN ports are 100, the WAN port which connects to the modem is 10...

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
So is that is 100% router cannot go beyond 4MB?
So is wireless or wired best and anyone recommend one that plugs and plays with a 360, PC and laptop.
What do I need if wireless for 360 and laptop?
Once again cheers all, at least I think I now finally understand...my router is useless

Can I buy the VM supplied £40 one in the shops for the same price and is that one any good?
What model is it? Thanks

Yes, new router time.

Something like that will be perfect for the average home user. You can plug xbox, pc, laptop etc directly into it or wirelessly.
The Xbox will requires the wireless adaptor though. Keep cabled wherever possible.

From what the others here have found, your router -- while theoretically capable of handling 10Mb/s -- is probably so old that, in reality, it can't cope with those speeds.
Time for a new one, I'm afraid.

I only use my router for xbox360 live about once a month!
If no one can help me get my router up to 10MB what is the best buy.
Ideally I would like a router that plugs and plays (as you can tell I have no idea how to set anything up PC wise!!)
If I go wireless (is that best option?) do I need to buy something to stick in back of 360 and PC to pick up net?
Also I am thinking of getting a laptop soon so presume wireless is best, what do I need to get that online with router?
|
Almost all routers now allow 4 x wired plus wireless connections -- you want one advertised as either an 802.11g (up to about 19Mb/s) or 802.11n (30Mb/s+). When looking for a laptop (again, almost all laptops now include a built-in wifi adapter), just check that it too can handle the wireless speeds your new router can process.
I'm not a gamer but I believe to play your 360 online wirelessly, you'll need one of these.
I'm hesitant to suggest which router is best -- whatever that means! -- there are so many to choose from with all sorts of features. If you've got a mate or colleague who might help you if something goes wrong, it could be a good idea to get whatever they're already using...
And you could do worse than to pay VM £40 for their locked version of a reliable Netgear model as, theoretically, they'll offer some level of support in the future (tho' they won't necessarily help with wireless problems unless you're also using one of their wireless adapters -- a ridiculous idea, given the number of built-in products around!).
Whatever you choose, don't go for the cheapest option -- kit is cheap for a reason. You'll be using it every day for years -- it's worth forking out a few extra quid for proven reliability!

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
So if I go for Netgear WGR614UK Wireless 54G Cable Router
I can still connect the PC and 360 with wires? But if needed I can go wireless too?
Also this one will 100% work at 10MB download and plug and play?
Thanks again
Just thought I understand the £54 xbox wireless adaptor. So with the netgear router what needs to be added to that or the laptop for it to work wireless? I shall wire my PC and 360 to it, IT WILL TAKE CABLES I USE NOW, WON'T IT? Do I have to buy something for the laptop or is that all auto if it is wi-fi laptop?
Thanks yet again

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
Your XBox360 & PC will plug into the ethernet ports on the new router using the same cables that you have at the moment. A new laptop, assuming it has WiFi (and pretty much any new laptop will), will also connect to the new router through the wireless connection without you needing to buy any further equipment.

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
First post for a long time guys, the mods told me I needed to make a post so here goes, I am not overly PC savvy.
I have VM BB £25pm, live near Leicester and have been pretty happy for a number of years with the service, my modem is the NTL 100 which as far as I can remember I use ethernet.
I see that I now get 10mb? instead of 4 so I did a speed test and found I was getting around 9.75 download and .5 upload? which I believe is quite good.
Now I didn't really notice any difference from 4 to 10, should I have done?
Do I need to reboot my modem if so How?
TIA

When you connect it you will go through a setup procedure, this will configure your wireless etc. They really are very simple if you follow the instructions.
I run wires wherever i can, only my laptop is wireless as my router is under my tv for my ps3, 360 and wii
Is you laptop wifi? What is it? Make/model....

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
Haven't puchased the laptop yet. So I can ensure that is wi-fi.
With wireless is it password protected to stop othrs using my BB? Is this easy to deal with on Netgear router?
My BB modem is Ambit NTL Home 120 I take it that will work with Netgear? Its a silver one.
Also the netgear router will not interfere with my TV digisender will it?
Thanks

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
Anyone using the 'Netgear WGR614UK Wireless 54G Cable Router' with xbox360 and a TV digisender and of course a modem like mine the ambit NTL Home 120?
Just want to make sure it will all work before I make the purchase.
Thanks yet again.

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?
I don't know any laptop that wont come with wifi anymore.
You can change the channel on the router or on the digisender if you get problems.
With the security on the router set it to WPA and then you can choose a passcode. It will all be in the manual.
