Thanks again
seems strange you only getting slow speeds however do try if have'nt already the tcp optimizer

http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe

The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

once you run it select your speed with slider ie 10mb 10000kbps
select optimal settings at bottom click modify all network adaptors
apply changes then ok them then Restart pc, hopefully should see improvement's But wont hurt trying it

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?

Did that still 4MB, bit weird modem results show 10MB yet download is 4MB

How else can I sort this being stuck on 4MB?

So do I just phone VM and say please send me a FREE router?

EDIT - Just phoned told me £40 for a router, pointed mt to T&Cs online

Free wireless router offer: - Wireless enabled equipment required. Available to all new Broadband customers taking our Size: L and Size: XL Broadband services (subject to status and credit checks). A non-refundable, one time service charge of £40 will apply to all new Broadband customers taking our Size: M Broadband service and all existing Broadband customers taking the wireless router. Should you sign up to our Size: L or Size: XL Broadband service and subsequently downgrade to Size: M within your minimum contract period you will be required to pay the service charge for the wireless router, currently £40.

Thanks

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?

oh yeah forgot to say that part new customers only so they say
as for speeds hmm maybe try other speed tests
ie www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk is one i use often being on upto 20mb
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/res...6978&v=4658730
Download Speed: 16480 kbps (2060 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 703 kbps (87.9 KB/sec )

otherwise try the newsgroups say your download speed is not what is supposed to be
curious how is the upload speed

  • Turn off your pc, router and modem
  • Disconnect the ethernet cable that runs from your pc to your router and plug it into your cable modem (so that your pc is wired direct to the modem)
  • Turn on the modem and wait for a minute (or at least until the leds stop flashing)
  • Turn on your pc
  • Close as many applications on your computer as possible, in particular any P2P, streaming or IM programs.
  • Open your browser and start 2 simultaneous downloads from the VM demo games server plus 2 simultaneous downloads of Zen test files. That's four file downloads happening at once!
  • Now add up each of the four download speeds to get your accurate download rate.
  • Post your combined download speed back here.

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?

Upload 483, download 4323

Will now do Ceedee's recommendation and post results

Thanks yet again!

---------- Post added at 19:58 ---------- Previous post was at 19:42 ----------

Now connected direct to PC no router.

Did speed test first just to see and result is :

Download 9840, Upload 482.

So why is my router slowing it down? And how do I solve it?

Cheers

---------- Post added at 20:15 ---------- Previous post was at 19:58 ----------

Router connected back in 4100 download

How do I sort my router?

Thanks

---------- Post added at 20:29 ---------- Previous post was at 20:15 ----------

Did it all again 10MB direct to PC.

Belkin FSD5230-4 router introduced 4MB

Why is my router capping my speed?

Thanks

Very pleased to hear that you've narrowed down the problem!

I get the impression that CF is seeing far more problems involving Belkin routers than other manufacturers lately.
If you've got a Belkin 7230 802.11g wireless/cable router version 7, you should read this first.

I'm afraid that I can only offer two other suggestions:

1) Take a note of all the relevant settings in your router (LAN IP addresses, DNS servers, DHCP server settings, any port redirections, firewall settings, etc), then disconnect from your pc and do a factory reset. (Check your router's manual for instructions -- often you need to poke a tiny hole with a fine wire.)
It's probably wise to then go through the same power cycle routine that you did before and try to connect to the net without changing any default settings. If you have problems, go back through your router's settings changing them to the ones you've taken note of.

2) If your router is not a 7230 v7, try searching Belkin Support for your model number and check if there's a firmware update available.

If neither of those ideas corrects your problems you may need to think of buying a new router -- my advice is to avoid the cheaper models and go for "industrial strength", commercial brands (I use a vastly over-specified Draytek Vigor that has never given me any problems). But hopefully other helpful folk will come up with further suggestions.

Good luck!

Edit: Belkin's website is shi^U^U^U in a terrible state!
You'll find plenty of information about your router and links to firmware updates on this page.
You should be able to check for updates via the router's own web-based configuration page accessible via http://192.168.2.1

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?

Router connected though cable on pc?

Could be wireless channel having loads of interference.

Is the Wan port 10 or 100mbps? If it's 10 that will be your problem.

Re: 10mb Upgrade. How can I tell ?

Cheers for all that ceedee.

Done it all, firmware, restore the lot. Still 4MB download via router and 10MB with no router

Is it my router that is capped at 4MB then and there is no way to sort it?

I only use my router for xbox360 live about once a month!

If no one can help me get my router up to 10MB what is the best buy.

Ideally I would like a router that plugs and plays (as you can tell I have no idea how to set anything up PC wise!!)

If I go wireless (is that best option?) do I need to buy something to stick in back of 360 and PC to pick up net?

Also I am thinking of getting a laptop soon so presume wireless is best, what do I need to get that online with router?

Thanks again...hopefully someone can solve my current router problem bit unreal that it is stuck at 4MB!!!?
