LAG!!!!
Hey guyz not really sure where to put this so exuse me.
Since Vm bought NTL/Telewest ive been getting sooo much lag honestly!
I play alot of online games, and recently starting from about the 27th of June i've been getting 300-500ping anyone know if virgin are doing some type of work in Scotland ? Vm always do this, they could inform us if work is going on instead of killing my line. And i stream alot of frag HD frag movies and next thing i know am on 1mg broadband, something has to be done and tbh am gonna be soo happy when i change to adsl-24!

What you're experiencing is STM or "Traffic Management". You can find information on http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t/traffic.html

Even after the 21:00 "Cut-off" I still struggle to get a ping below 300, and at times it can be as high as 10,000 ms! Obviously, this causes the server to throw me off.
I'm in the process of analysing tracerts and data from DU Meter to see if I can work out what else might be the problem. I've even posted on WoW's Tech support forum incase there's an issue at Telia's end, but any feedback any of the better techies can give would be appreciated.

No it wont stop, as this is Virgin's way of stealing YOUR paid for internet to give to other, newer users that they cram on wherever they can!
They are taking your bandwidth and giving it to newer customers just so they don't have to upgrade their networks (more)
So sorry to say that STM (Subscriber Traffic Management) is here to stay!
I know what you are about to say; "But it's advertised as UNLIMITED", and yes you are right, but then again, since when have Virgin Media played by the rules!

Re: LAG!!!!
high 'ping' usually means your routing is all over the place, you need to do a trace.
download winmtr and put the server ip in and let it run for 5 mins, when your ping is high and see where you route is taking you. this program will also tell you if you are dropping packets, in the %loss column.

STM should not, and most likely won't, have any effect on you latency (pings)

Re: LAG!!!!
STM will not cause bad pings it is much more likely to be a bad backbone or router somewhere. you need to remember alot of routers will not respond to a ping unless it is idle as they prioritise bandwith so your tracerts may not be accurate

He's been downloading HD movies, so I am almost 99% certain it will be STM. Someone mentioned that when you hit STM, your routing changes and as a result the pings rise. So yes, I can attribute all of that to STM.

every time i've been hit by STM (granted, not a lot) my pings have remained the 20-30ms that they always have been

Re: LAG!!!!
same here STM does not change my routing it remains constant all the time with 30-40ms pings
i think it matters which area you are in alot of the setup varies between area's with some being more congested than others !

Bandwidth loss, yes, high latency, as some have mentioned, probably not.
I've done several tracert's and the routing itself doesnt seem to change whilst being STM'd or not (I deliberately got myself STM'd to check this).
I'll try winmtr, and see if that throws up some more questions.
Cheers all.

Done and run - but the Host IP (Which I assume needs to be the IP of the server I'm attemtping to contact, so in this case, Blizzard's server in Paris) doesnt return any results. It just sits idle forever.
I've tried my own IP, and this returns results fine, but it seems that pinging anything else just returns nothing.
Did I miss something?
*EDIT* Just read some bug notes on the latest version of MTR - seems like it doesnt like running with Vista.

Reason: vista = rubbish!
