As the crow flies about 400 - 500 metres I would say, but the engineer said the line went away from the exchange direction wise, to start with, but yeah still close I would say.
Pinging the BBC on normal connection gives about 45 ms, and the same to a game server in Southampton that I use, both are about 15 or 16 now which I am happy with. Possibility of slight packet loss on fastpath but generally a lot better than my VM.

Re: Finally time to leave vm?
We very nearly bought a house that had the local exchange at the end of the garden. We'd have still stuck with VM though.
From the PC here (on XL), I get a stable 14ms ping response from bbc.co.uk, from the machine I use as a router I get between 13.5 ms and 14.5ms, From a Be account (which for the voip server I use is generally the best) I get a solid 18.0ms, from a bulldog line (which is generally the worst, just not when testing this time) I get between 12.3ms and 13.1ms. As a completely useless comparison, from my hosted machine I get around 2.15ms.
Although not the fastest, the most consistent reply is from Be.
I don't really think it is a worthwhile test, but either way the VM account does well.
Although the Be service is 4 hops closer to www.bbc.co.uk (although it is generally closer to everything, It's three hops away from the voip providers servers that I use it for).

Re: Finally time to leave vm?
VM contract finished last week after 2 month head to head with ADSL (O2).
Now with o2, 1700 m from exchange- rock solid 12 meg connection even with a large number of phones, skybox etc in the house.
As an o2 mobile customer all this comes at the "extortionate" price of £10 a month and includes a free UK Helpline with people who are interested in helping you!.
Still keep looking at this forum though! Maybe one day cable may be worth returning to.

Re: Finally time to leave vm?
Yeah I am thinking of leaving VM.
The whole fibre optic revolution doesn't apply to me.. because the cable is still copper from the exchange to my house and to my computer so I'm just wondering whether everyone else is getting something better than i am ?? becasue as far as i can see it's still ADSL.
Another thing is the is the bandwidth limits. What's the point of having supposed faster downloads with fibre optic if they are going to be throttled after 900MB... wow.. i can get that 900MB faster than i could before (maybe)..
I personally think virgin media are false advertising. They give you the impression that you can download files at a constantly high speed all day:
"4 seconds to download a music track".... they should be changing that too "4 seconds to download a music track, until we throttle the line and you get one in 2 minutes".
So yeah... thinking about leaving?? you bet i am. But only because they are one of the biggest restrictors around :

Yea...i hate being 1.5KM away from the exchange and getting 22/2.5 Upload, its sooo hard having to download at those speeds!
Much prefer my old VM STM'd down to 5Mbit connection for downloading

Re: Finally time to leave vm?
Well it looks like I'm still having to have virgin's adsl service when I move, but it will only be for 12months.
