don't know why you think you're getting 120 days retention with VM - I thought it was set at 7 days (and that's all I can get)

but I'm definitely cancelling Giganews very soon - 7 days will be enough for me for most of the time
by the looks headers are stored for 7 days but i think msg-id's are stored a bit longer as i was grabbing files that were about 2 weeks old via nzb

Re: [Merged] Are VM now throttling newsgroups? Mine seems to be!

I just grabbed a movie that had been posted 82.5 days & a tv episode that was 54 days old, so the retention is definately more than 7 days.

Remember that in late April VM switched from their own servers & outsourced their usenet to easynews (ie it used to be 7 days until recently).

Don't believe me? Think i'm wrong? Then simply download something yourself!

before i posted, I did try downloading 3 different shows (between 20 and 40 days old) using nzb's and none of them worked - just tried another 2 shows and 1 film - and none of them worked either

edit - just managed to download a 49 day old film

shame it's so hit and miss with retentions/groups it carries - otherwise I'd be very impressed with the service

do a download of headers and see how far back the date goes as i said, headers and downloading via msg-id (nzb files) are not the same retention, go download headers from a group and see how far back they go

My opinion is that the virginmedia newsgroups are still too 'hit & miss' - I tried a previous 'Top Gear' episode download, allegedly 29.06.2008, from alt.binaries.tv - using an nzb file, & just got file not found - the same nzb worked fine on the Giganews server....

Re: [Merged] Are VM now throttling newsgroups? Mine seems to be!

A quick question about Giganews, since I can't find much on their site: Can I buy an account, then cancel it after a month, or will I be under a contract to keep the account for longer?
It's just that I want to get some binaries that are about 100 days old, but the VM News Server has incomplete versions of some of the .rar and .par2 files. I'm assuming Giganews will allow me to download more complete versions.

Thanks in advance.

im confused...

are people saying that they are getting full speed via newsgroups regardless of the amoun of data they download

or are we saying that if you download via VM newsgroups then u dont get throttled in any way?

im currently using giganews - very happy with their service (i use it with newsleecher)

well I'm getting full 20Mb download with both Giganews and VM newsgroups (until both get STM'd)- no difference in speed

only difference, as far as I can tell, is with retention/groups they carry

Giganews

If this is a trial NOTE if then it could be local to me. Or something is misconfigured. I am in the Warrington area

At this moment in time if i don't use SSL i am downloading at 10mb with no fluctuation. If i then turn on SSL i jump straight to 16mb so you tell me what you think that points at

try downloading something from the VM server, how many connections do you use? i often had to use a full 20 to get anywhere near 20meg at times, depending on the time of day i can use as little as 7 to get full speed

As i cannot use SSL with Virgins newsgroups i can only get 10mb. I have tried my laptop, A Linux machine, and my vista machine there all the same.

Re: [Merged] Are VM now throttling newsgroups? Mine seems to be!

must be a local issue then as i have used giganews and astraweb without SSL and am seeing full speeds

and the idea was to see what speed you got from the VM server, obviously you have already tested this

Yep.

I have always used giganews because they have a superb level of service. I am going to sign up with hitnews.eu for a months trial and see if they are the same.

If its the same and i can only get full speed when SSLing then that in my mind proves that there is something going on local to me.
