Problem with new router & Virgin Media internet
Hi there!
I have bought a new Belkin F5D8233uk4 N Wireless router, and every so often I lose connectivity to the internet, I look at the front of the router and the normally blue Modem light turns an orangy colour.
Then look at the modem and it has all the normal lights on, Sync & Ready on, Eternet light on and occasionally the send & receive lights flash.
Modem signal levels are
Cable Modem Downstream
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 0
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : 6.0 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 41.5 dB
Cable Modem Upstream
Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 4
Upstream Frequency : 29200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 54.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2
I never had any problems with my 2 previous routers I have used.
Info from the router: (latest firmware sucessfully installed)

Re: Problem with new router & Virgin Media internet
Could it perhaps have anything to do with this thread?
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87...r-upgrade.html
If so, the firmware needs upgrading.
Looks like it's constantly renewing lease.
I could be wrong but no harm in looking.

At first i thought it was that same thing, but no its a different router, this 1 here is what it is
In the router pages, LAN > LAN Settings
the lease time of time the DHCP server will reserve the IP address for each computer is forever, do you mean that setting?
Also, I upgraded the firmware to 3.01.17 from another version.

Subnet Mask 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway XX.XX.X.X
DHCP Server 62.31.112.121
DNS Server 194.168.4.100

Nope, not anything like that at all, here is a pic of the status in lan settings (have erased any private information)

I have been setting networks up now for around 5 years, both wired and wireless, this has got me stumped!
I even changed the router settings from dynamic to static (being as I am supposed to have 4 static IP addresses) switched on my PC this morning only to find out that I couldnt get online, checked the router and it was the setting I changed last night, so the question is, WHY was I charged £10 for these static IP addresses when it seems that they are NOT static, as they change over night???
Bloody Virgin Media, they really do get my goat!

Re: Problem with new router & Virgin Media internet
do you get the same problems without the router in place or with a different older router?

Well I cant answer that as the old routers got sent to the recycling bank!
I also cannot do a straight enet connection to 1 of my PC's to the modem as I dont have a long ethernet lead.
When they installed all this, I have a 3-way splitter, 1 lead going into my v+, then another lead through my bedroom exiting my room through the brick wall, then down stairs to the v box in the living room, and a lead from the splitter (in my bedroom) to my daughters bedroom which is next door, and the modem is sat on top of a high wardrobe with the new router sat right next to it.
When I had my first Linksys router, occasionally it would drop out completely after transfering large amounts of data through it (be it wireless or wired) from 1 computer to another, then I got annoyed with it 1 day and threw it down the stairs (this of course resulted in it being smashed up) so my friend lent me their old homehub so I could use the access point facility, which worked good (apart from I could only have a max of 3 wireless devices connected, any more and I'd get a 192.168.x.x ip address with no connectivity) so at the weekend I went to maplin and bought this router as I eventually want to upgrade all wireless networking to N instead of the current 54G setup.
Now the router has been ok since I switched it on a few hours ago, if and when it happens again, i will check the logs of the modem & router and will post back with what I find.

Re: Problem with new router & Virgin Media internet
@piggy
if you have nothing worth saying, please keep it zipped!
this is a brand spanking new modem (i bought it shrinkwrapped, all brand new, so IT SHOULD work straight out the box..
And for your information, I have actually been on the phone to Belkin, and they say that there are no issues for my particular modem, we even went through all the settings and they confirmed that none of the settings are affecting it.

Re: Problem with new router & Virgin Media internet
Try the following
log onto the belkin webpage http://192.168.2.1
from the menu on the left hand side select DNS
untick the option automatic from ISP and in the box "DNS adress" type 4.2.2.1 and "secondary DNS adress" 4.2.2.2
press apply changes and test.
if the problem does occur again , please post your log files

modem or router as you cannot buy a modem
should work but dont forget that isnt always the case and piggy does have sort of a point, if it worked before but a new router causes problems then it does indicate the router is at fault

Sorry, I was so into the typing, I forgot to proof-read it before I submitted!
You are right, I did mean a brand new router!
I got it from Maplin at the weekend as I no longer had a router, and had trailing wires all over the house, no body was impressed!
And a little bit of an update:
So far (touch wood) there has been no more problems with the router, a few days ago I did have to reboot the modem, as the Modem & Internet lights turned orange on the router, unplugged them both, I waited a good 5 mins, then plugged in the modem, waited for it to lock on, then the router, and as I have said, no probs so far!
Could it just have been the router "getting settled" or something like that?
Anyway thanks for your suggestions, even if I'd tried them before, and I hope this will stay working perfectly so I can build up an N network
A stranger thing is now happening, I have got uTorrent open, but not downloading full speed (only 60KB/s max) and pages are taking a huge amount of time to fix, I have changed over to OpenDNS, could this be a cause?
