Re: Will I ever get more than 8-9meg on my 20meg connection?
Well, the engineer came out today and said all my connections were shot.
He certainly did something right
Mon, 7 Jul 2008 15:44:58 UTC
Test 1: 1024K took 60 ms = 17066.7 KB/sec, approx 140630 Kbps, 137.33 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 50 ms = 20480 KB/sec, approx 168755 Kbps, 164.8 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 70 ms = 14628.6 KB/sec, approx 120540 Kbps, 117.71 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 110 ms = 18618.2 KB/sec, approx 153414 Kbps, 149.82 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 145835 Kbps, 142.42 Mbps
(methinks IE7 is playing up )

Only joking, anyway as a techy is bound to point out, you are on a different system so I can't pinch any back off you, it is half of Cheshire running off this single UBR that is the problem

I sometimes even get the speeds below, I am very fortunate that my area is not oversubscribed. but mostly I get anywhere from 21-24mb and get the occasional 28-30mb...as you can see the upload is still crap...I want 2.5mb upload on 20mb and 5mb upload on 50mb does anyone agree with me...that 700kb upload for a 20mb download is bizzare...compared to Be Broadbands 2.5mb upload

Good for them. For modems that actually have logs that use the same timing as the rest of the system it's because they haven't acquired ToD from the CMTS yet. Without said synchronisation or a bit of work on the CMTS code you can't get online. Have a read of the DOCSIS specs or watch a modem come online, the init(t) state is awaiting ToD / time of day, which usually comes in turn from an NTP server.

Speedtests lie, its impossible to get 28-30Mbit on a 20Mbit config, sometimes trips up and you can get around 21-23 but never that high.
As to your other question, 5Mbit upload on 50Mbit? not gonna happen, it's 1.5Mbit right now and there is only talks to put it at 2.5

The TOD server tends not to work on Virgin nowadays and it is a known issue but they still get online, so do not shoot the messenger.

I think you'll find thats speed caching for you, they wont keep at that level.
If you seriously get that constant then you'd be the -only- VM user to, the config just wouldnt let you get that sort of speed.
Only way to get that is by using a cloned modem....
