VM Internet dropping connection
Hello, I'm with virgin and on the 4mg package with a lynksys wired router. Can anyone tell me why my PC keeps loosing the connection? I will be browsing as normal and suddenly get 'server not found' and it will remaim that way for 10 or so min before starting to work again.
Any help would be great as it's starting to get on my nerves and i never had this problem before i joined vm
thanks
paul

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
i'd recommend your first test should be removing the router so the modem is direct to pc and see if issues continue occuring.
then you'll have a better idea straight away whats the cause of the issue.
if the issues continue go to 192.168.100.1
and post results here and may be able to see some issue on that

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
As suggested, I'd remove your router firstly.
You could also post your modem stats here so we can take a look at them for you.
Downstream power and SNR.
And upstream power.
The make & model of your modem would be quite useful too.

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
also downstream frequency. quite guilty of causing connection drops, particularly on webstar cm's.

also the downstream frequency.
who was it you were with before and is it a new router you have?

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
hi, thaks for the replies.
the problem is intermittent, as are all pain in the **** problems so i will try removing the router the next time i am suffering.
my modem stats are as follows:
WebSTAR EPC2100R2
Modem Serial Number
210053809
Cable Modem MAC Address
EDIT: REMOVED
Hardware Version
2.1
Software Version
v2.0.2r1256-060303
Receive Power Level
6.3 dBmV
Transmit Power Level
44.0 dBmV
Cable Modem Status
Operational
I hope this means something to you guys cus it doesn't to me lol
The router is a linksys wireless G with speed booster model WRT54GS, but as i said i connect through an ethernet cable and the wireless antennea is turned off in the routers configuration.
I was adsl with BT before moving to VM about 6 months ago. I have had this problem on and off since joining VM. I get 'server not found' or 'unable to connect' in my browser when trying to go to the next page. also msn occasionally disconnects at the same time.

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
You should edit out your Modem MAC ASAP.
Also the info on the signal page would be handy particularly the downstream frequency.
Also when the connection drops can you still access that page? Or your router config page?

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
As above. Posting your MAC address on the forum isn't the best idea.

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
thanks for that as you can tell i am a bit of a muppet at this kind of thing
---------- Post added at 19:10 ---------- Previous post was at 18:57 ----------
signal page is as follows:
Downstream Status
Operational
Downstream Frequency
331000000 Hz
Modulation
256QAM
Bit Rate
4096000 bits/sec
Power Level
8.0 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio
41.1 dB
Upstream Channel
The data shown in the table below provides information about the signal being transmitted to the network from your cable modem.
Upstream Status
Operational
Upstream Frequency
29200000 Hz
Modulation
16QAM
Bit Rate
384000 bits/sec
Power Level
41.5 dBmV
I can go back to the previous page and i think i can still get on to the router config just can't view any new pages. Keep trying and eventually it will go to the new page.
Should I be worried about my little oversight with the mac address? can I change it to restore my security?
out of the frying pan.......lol

Re: VM Internet dropping connection
all info there looks spot on tbh.
i would really advised connecting direct to your pc, b4 it disconnects again, as when it disconnect you would need to reboot the modem to it to recognise its plugged into a new device .which would mean you wouldnt then need to wait again.
connect direct, leave it that way for as long as it takes for you to be confident that its not gona drop, or until it does drop.
