Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
Can any 1 tell me what these figures mean, the last 2 weeks have been horrendous for gaming it's that bad that i struggle to watch stuff on youtube aswell.
I have a ping of around 40ms stable usually but now it is around 100ms and using the quake lagometer in game you can see the connection all over the place.
As a server admin i can see that every VM customer has the same problem that connects to are servers, and the are from all different parts of the country.
What really gets me mad is that i have to pay a 10p connection charge and then 25p a minuet to talk to someone on the other side of the world that has no idea of what the problem is.
Who then arranges a engineer to visit my house so i take a day off work only to be informed that he can not make it as he has been very busy.
Funny thing was it was 3.45pm 15/01/2008 connection perfect no problems found then guess what 10 minuets after he informed me that he could not attend the connection fails down to around 500kbs from 4000kbs
This is really very poor service after a complaint to customer support they put me through to a tech guy in the UK and he said they do have problems and that he could not see it getting resolved to the middle of FEB.
So do i have to pay for my totally useless connection for the next 2 months which i can only use it when it is broke.
Very disappointed customer of VM.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
I can tell you what those figures mean....
1/ You should not expect a decent connection speed at any given time.
2/ You should not have the cheek to actually to try and play online games.
3/ You will be told that the connection is perfect and there is nothing wrong with it so stop moaning.
4/ A ping of 200 must be ok because you can't show any evidence of packet loss, even if you did it would be poo pood.
5/ Join the VM gamers club @ lagola central where you can empty a full 30 round clip and not do any damage.
Sorry for sarcasm lordstomp but it is a well documented problem that nobody will take ownership of.

wonder what market research tells these ISP guys........surely there is a large demand for good gaming ISPs.Surely a good proportion of households have a gamer in them in one form or another.

If you're referring to the traceroute results you have posted they don't appear to reflect any unacceptable levels of latency at the time you ran them. The responses from all of the destination hosts are under 30ms.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
I was having major ping/lag issues with BF2 from around Feb last year (was working fine up until then). It was driving me crazy, but what eventually seemed to fix it was changing a setting in Windows.
I changed the way Windows used Processor Scheduling from Programs to Background Services because I'd read that the Punk Buster update from about Feb '07 starts Punk Buster as a background service and that some people had issues.
It's been fine ever since. I've not put the option back to Programs since though, but it worked for me after trying lots of testing on my network and net connection.

Yeah your right.
I did this when i actually had a good connection.
touch wood it has been OK since, just a very small loss in connection and not enough to give me a bad game.
But if i have the same problem again i will post my traceroute.
Seems to me that enough customers have complained and the VM staff have taken note.
Still it's a shame we still have to pay for the privilege of technical help for a service that we pay for in the first place.

I, and certainly all other gamers on here would class a ping of 100 to be useless to a UK server. That somebody can ping 100 to a West Coast US server is totally irrelevant. If you have followed these game related topics which I suspect you have then you will know packet loss is of far greater concern to us. If I normally ping 20 to a UK server and that suddenly jumps to 100+ it is a fairly good way of telling me that something is wrong with the network. I see players with the Uni connections and invariably they have the most kills, not because of a stupidly low ping, but because the quality of connection is rock solid. I play with people from all over Europe, as far as Russia, and they manage perfectly well with pings in the 70 - 80 region because of the quality of connection.
To say that my experience is perfect because I sometimes have a final hop of 16 ish is patently not the case.
Like I have said unless you actually play under those conditions then you will never have a clue how bad it is.
|
sorry people, I'm not a gamer, & I apologise if my posts appear to be contradicting your experience, but if you use traceroutes as evidence, then you are subject to the 'final hop' analysis, imo - you will have to explain a lot more clearly why a final hop of 16ms can indicate a bad connection

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
For about a week now I have been having large problems with Virgin Media and World of Warcraft.
My latency goes from 400-2000 making the game unplayable and on doing multiple speed tests with multiple sources my connection is less than 1Mb. I am on Virgin Media's 20Mb service. (The modem configuration is correct for 20Mb)
This is preventing me from playing any games whether it be WoW or C&C3 or any others which is online. It's also hurting when just browsing sites such as youtube or any other moderate-bandwidth site.
I live in the M22 Wythenshawe area in Manchester.
I do not have any uploads/downloads on while playing games, I have never exceeded usage policy, and nothing has changed on my computer or with the internal lines.
I hope Virgin tech's are viewing this topic as it's a serious issue which is obviously the result of something at Virgin Media's end.

I too play (or try to play as of recent weeks) WoW and i live in the M20 Post Code area.
Up until a few weeks ago, my ping would average 150-250ms at any time of day. This is perfectly playable and acceptable to me.
However, in recent weeks my average ping is 350-450ms, often averaging 700ms for minutes. I find anything over 350ms is simply problematic at best.
My actual download speeds have also decreased along with the increase in latency and during the evenings (3pm-ish to 2am), i am lucky to be able to download at 512k speeds (i'm on 4MB).
NTL blame it on Telia but according to my traceroutes, all the issues lie with NTL before Telia. Some evenings, its gets so bad, i have multiple timeouts on the traceroutes. This will normally result in a night of being constantly disconnected from the game.
Last night, i performed multiple traceroutes to common websites and servers and most of these showed packet loss along with high latency.

Yeah homealone, I can see your predicament or should that be my/our (gamer) predicament.
I can't get my head round what's happening either. I don't know the best way to show what's happening regarding the game experience, save you coming round to my house and seeing for yourself
All I can really say, and that seems to be becoming more the case is the gamer experience is not as good as it was.. say this time last year.
I'm having a hard time trying to get over some solid evidence, suffice to say that a "problem" is apparent to a lot of users. That problem seems to translate as packet loss, although technically that may not be what is actually happening. FPS games are very time critical and we pick up on the slightest glitch very easily, even more so when it's a prolonged spike.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
Florence,
Having replied about the time Virgin Media are taking to do maintenance
on your UBR. I thought I'd cheer you up, here's mine......
Hi noggo
I have identified a packet loss issue on the UBR that you are on. This is
already raised under internal ticket ref 616365. There is network
maintenance planned for April to upgrade this UBR.

I'm not a happy bunny ATM and there's a recorded letter going in the post on Monday that will cheer them up. I've been reporting bad latency and packet loss for months now and finally someone from VM replies with what I believe to be a genuine answer.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
Surely they're joking?
In my area (M22 Wythenshawe) the situation is dire... in the morning i have 20Mb and very low latency. Yet after 4pm (ironically when traffic management becomes active in the Virgin Media servers) my connection drops to less than 1Mb and latency goes to 400-2000... the connection returns to normal just after midnight.
This has only been happening for 2 weeks so surely it's not that the service is overloaded otherwise it would have been a progressive downfall in service rather than a instant change from one day to the next.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?
Hi Noggo
Seems the old idea of monitoring the network and planning upgrades before problems hit are long gone and most waittill most of the neighbourhood is complaining before they admit thwere is a problem. Mind I blame India as the bad link since they always blame the equipment in the home.
I am not happy about the situation and feel that my wait is less than some but last night with my ingame loss ranging from 0 to 6 and choke going as high as 15 then server kicking me. Really makes playing the game hard. If this persists into Feb I wil be writing to them also whe I started playing CS I had the ping of -20 always now I never see anything less than 40 most of the time it is 80+ bouncing up and down every few seconds from 80 to over 1000 last night. the graph was all sharp ups and downs.
the news group help is the only decent thing to come out of the merger since these guys are Blueyonder staff.
