If you believe the advertising is incorrect or inaccurate you are entitled to complain to the regulator.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

After 3 days of 90+ pings my pings are now excellent and back to normal. I hope they remain normal for rest of day and into evening. If they dont and go back up to 90+ then gamers are in for a crap ride, as it would suggest something more deliberate and here for good.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

My ping over the last couple of days has been sky high (for me) normally 19-29 but last few days it has been just under the hundred I only play CSS online and have noticed noises missing and such like grenades and even gunshots not making sounds. At first thought it was the warserver that i normally play but when i tried another it was the same. I went to speedtest .net and was only getting 539 mb/s from my normally rock solid 4mb connection. It is now back to 3945 mb/s, to think i was toying with the idea of going to 20mb connection. At the moment i connect using a STB and the idea of putting a modem in the loop put me off especially with the horror stories on here. Oh well back up to speed now and long may it continue. Good luck to all you others.

Yeah., I've noticed that Wow is now very laggy on VM's network. Been bad for the last few weeks. Takes 30 seconds to loot a body.. pings have been getting steadily worse since STM was introduced, if they get any worse than it is now, wow will be unplayable.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

Just finished a game on CoD4 there, on a server that I usually ping 40 - 60 on. Massive lag spikes during game play which is very unusual. Did a tracert and here are the results. See attached.

No packet loss when pinging.

Something seems to be wrong at e31-gw1-uk.cableinet.net, not sure what though. Thoughts? Ideas?

Mmmmm Cannae attach a screenie.

seeing as there is no sla, i'd expect VM to only be checking for outages as thats all they would be countable for. there is no sla for packet loss / slow speeds and so i doubt (and wouldnt expect VM to) monitor the customers connections for packet loss etc and would rely on the customer reporting it. i assume you have reported it (newsgroups is the best way)?

for the record, the people in here reporting bad pings is a tiny tiny tiny amount of the total customers so it seems that can deliver most of the time

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

Hi, first post be gentle.

Post 34, gives some useful information to investigate the problem with the PingPlotter Pro attachment

Doing a traceroute to the same address I get the following

$ traceroute server25.teamhost.co.uk
traceroute to server25.teamhost.co.uk (85.234.155.53), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
SNIP
3 cdif-t2cam1-a-v114.inet.ntl.com (62.254.255.161) 10.689 ms 10.498 ms 16.356 ms
4 cdif-t2core-a-ge-wan83.inet.ntl.com (195.182.175.201) 16.414 ms 16.634 ms 16.619 ms
5 bir-bb-a-so-730-0.inet.ntl.com (213.105.174.185) 24.846 ms 24.076 ms 24.496 ms
6 nth-bb-b-so-220-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.185.85) 24.942 ms 13.790 ms 13.756 ms
7 tele-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com (62.253.184.2) 14.838 ms 17.738 ms 17.000 ms
8 212.250.14.90 (212.250.14.90) 17.800 ms 17.261 ms 20.811 ms
9 ge-5-2.the.uk.euroconnex.net (87.127.231.90) 123.588 ms 123.502 ms 122.814 ms
10 server25.teamhost.co.uk (85.234.155.53) 21.941 ms 18.887 ms 19.225 ms
$

Post 35, misses out the hops prior to hop 9, which would be useful to see the path it takes to get from a to b.

If each person posts a traceroute to the server they are having problems they can be compaired and see what the common hop is and that may be the one having the problem.

Hi, 73arm3

You need to explain what problems you are having along with any traceroute, are you playing a game on a bbc server and gettting poor ping times?

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

The problems Im having lately is..

Connection speeds dropping from anywhere between 800k and 3mb (im on 4mb con) and pings from gaming servers have gone from 40-60 to 100+ (servers I play on regularly and seem to be only person suffering). I have to reset my connection a few times a week (Im on a STB)....I was on a 800k connection at weekend and wasnt getting STM`d.

Probably not. The reply times for the hops you have highlighted will probably be due to that router treating your ping/icmp with low priority because it is currently busy processing traffic. The response back from the bbc web server is perfectly acceptable.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

I hope you guys are complaining to VM and asking for compenstaion for poor quality of service. The more people complain about the unstable connection the better. Either by newsgroup support, letter and dare I say it phone (then beg for your money back).

I've been having issues lately to. My ping to london servers before was 18 - 25ms nearly all the time and now its just erratic all the time. Lately saturday from lunch time to late evening and Sunday mid morning to late evening, you might as well not bother to turn your PC on. See attached two pictures of four minute window done yesterday to jolt server, 1st at 13:42 and 2nd at 17:38. You just can't play with a ping trace that looks like the Manhattan skyline (if you pause over image you should get the zoom icon for better quality picture).

In the end I'm going to vote with my feet and switch if things don't improve soon.

ISP's I have come up with:-
http://www.ukfsn.org/
above to Jolt servers is around 10 - 18ms
If you can go for business on above other than residential all the better, as off-peak starts at 8pm

http://www.aquiss.net/broadband-gaming.php
well what can i say. The only ISP I can find on the web, which states an average ping time to games servers.

http://www.plus.net/residential/broa...me_bbywpro_ban
Good alternative from what other people say, but low usage GB

Hi, 73arm3

On the games you are playing it's worth talking to the other players and finding out which server you are on and how to do a traceroute from your machine to the gaming server, also include the time of day it's happening as that can have an impact on the problems you may be seeing.

It's may be worth asking if you can get a stand alone cable modem from Virgin Media, then the stb won't have to display a telly picture and surf the web at the same time.

Interesting to see that some ISPs are now offering dedicated gaming services. I've been suffering serious connection issues with a few xbox live games for well over a year now and it makes you wonder what sort of detrimental (to gamers) QOS/Traffic prioritisation metrics or other mechanisms (and I don't mean STM) are being implemented acros VM's networks.

I've periodically been running benchmarking tests using netperf and found that I can max my upstream out with about 30KB/s of udp and when you reach this ceiling it renders the whole connection unusable - bad news for hosting. This could of course be something local or even an issue with the cable modem but it makes you wonder.
