Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

Same here in Stoke-on-Trent, high pings all servers and our gaming server is in Manchester...usually 30 - 50 ping....always 100+ now.

I must admit the service was alot more consistent when NTL were running the show.

And after the communications I`ve had with VM staff in customer offices, well its going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Stoke-on-Trent as a VM area is serviced by a 30gb pipe, and that mega over subscribed, mainly because its a University area.
The Support is a joke, always wanting to frig around with computer settings and never telling the truth the the lines can`t cope with the loading at peak times.

The only solution is to use your connection during off peak times then you will get your full speed....muppets.

Personally I`am part the way through doing a really ****** letter to VM.

I;ve been getting less than 4Mb on my 20Mb connection.

I've lost count the number of time I lost connection during a race on Live for Speed multiplay

Just to add Rob, I wasn't knocking the server in anyway. I found my ping to be totally acceptable and would start to panic at 120+

Indeed - I get on average 17ms while playing on the nthw cod4 server. Besides if anyone did knock it while I was on it I'd be tempted to reach behind me and kick 'em - or at the very least give them a strange name

I play Counter Strike and recently my latency has been almost too bad to play, you just dont bother until after midnight as it is up and down faster than a yoyo.

Tonight to the server we use for matches I have had packet loss and kept being kicked.

graph
text to the graph

Agreed it also shows problems with syndergy peering but it is mostly Virgin this has been going on for a few days now with no signs of improving.
Just completed a speed test on here must say thye are great (not)

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

I host 4 of my own Half-Life 2 Deathmatch servers co-located at Telehouse in London Docklands. I normally get an average ping of 18ms from here (just outside Brighton), but the last couple of days it's been averaging around 80ms.

Players using my servers from other ISPs have no problems, it's just the ones who are on Virgin Media services who are experiencing the higher latency recently.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

Just rang the service status telephone number and they had a message on their about 20mb customers having slow download speeds "engineers are aware and are working towards a resolution" - didnt say how long it would take to be fixed and they had NO message on the Service Status website, bloody joke.

I seriously cant believe they didnt bother to put up this serious issue on to the main service status page, 20mbit customers getting 3-5mbit is unacceptable.

Re: Any other gamers having REALLY bad ping last 2 days ?

PIngs and speeds been awful here in Bolton since Christmas. Had an engineer over yesterday to check things over. He reckoned my levels were spot on. Contacted Virgin last night via newsgroups and was told that there is nothing they can do. Not happy...

tbh, 3-5mbit is acceptable on 20:1 contended service. there is no sla and no *real* minimum speed before being unacceptable, if you don't like the speeds all you can really do is downgrade or leave. you aren't forced to stay

True VM, like most ISPs don't state a minimum speed they will offer. Perhaps they should. To be consistently getting less than 25% of your average expected speed is rubbish. Contention can reduce it to those levels, but it should only be occasionally.

Indeed hopefully OFCOM will start to get tough on ISPs who are clearly deceiving the average punter who knows nothing about what contention and the like means and instead purchases a service based on the headline "up to xyz speed". All the punter sees is that figure. Maybe ISPs should instead be marketing on the basis of an average speed?
