Testing 50mb in Kent
I would be interested to know if those that are testing the 50mb download are actually getting those speeds , if they are why is it most of us that are on 20mb seem to be only now getting 3mb, with all the complaints about virgin broadband i cannot believe its called over subscribed as an excuse for deteriating speeds, surely they need to concentrate on both issues, keeping existing customers happy and providing the speeds they are advertising aswell as improving their broadband sizes

Re: Testing 50mb in Kent
Those who are testing will no doubt be subject to confidentiality agreements as part of the testing package subscription. Thus, much as we might want to know stuff, the public feeback should be thin on the ground.

Re: Testing 50mb in Kent
50mb runs on a different frequency to everyone else so theoretically its a separate network so the bandwidth being sapped up by 2/4/20mb users doesnt affect the 50mb users and vice versa

Re: Testing 50mb in Kent
I have no doubt that the testers of 50mb are getting as near to the limit otherwise people might start complaining its a poor upgrade, but i wonder in a few months time will the speed drop as has the 20mb speed, when i upgraded to 20mb, speeds were perfect, but the last few months have been appalling, averaging 2-3mb, vm are now sending me a new modem , but this was fine also when 20mb was introduced, i shall wait to see if its a faulty modem

Re: Testing 50mb in Kent
Hi All,
I understand the 50meg BB is using a different frequency or something. This allows the bandwidth to be seperate to the current 2/4/20 BB. Why then was'nt the 20meg BB set up to use this technology from the start, then VM would not have any of the current grief, un-happy customers and could truely state it had the fastest BB?

because 50Mb/s uses different technology to 20Mb/s & requires different hardware at the headends & new modems for the subscribers. VM weren't in a position to enable that when 20Mb/s was launched.
Because the two systems operate independently, they hope enough current 20Mb/s customers will eventually upgrade & that will take some of the pressure off the oversubscribed parts of the network.

Because it uses bandwidth currently used for Analogue TV in other areas.

Re: Testing 50mb in Kent
A cynical person might comment that it is probably the 50 Mb trial which is overwhelming the servers resulting in the current pathetic performance many customers are experiencing.

Hmm, I had great speeds when I first upgraded but now they seem to have slowed down, although I can't tell whether or not this is just Rapidshare or me, but it hovers around 1MB/s so I don't really care. Upload is the key issue for me.

Another cynical person might also add in the VOD, the V+, The HD, ahem, channel and the 10meg to 20meg upgrade all without increasing the available bandwidth and I think, between us, we might have got it.
