PS3 wired connection!?

I've been trying for ages to connect my ps3 to my crap modem (I'm using the old NTL one. Thanks Virgin for giving me a new one.. and thanks again for advising me on which one to buy. "Go on the Virgin website and buy one" )

Anyway, anytime I connect it keeps coming up as a Failed IP address connection. I've tried manually entering everything then I've automatically connecting it but nothing seems to work!

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

Assuming your connecting your PS3 directly via ethernet to the modem, you will need to wait a few minutes for the DHCP to learn the MAC address of your PS3 before assigning it a seperate IP address to that of your computer.

And to Cableforum.

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

Yeah its via the ethernet. I've tried using the one provided by NTL, and then Playstation just to make sure its not a fault or anything (which was unlikely, but worth a try)

I've plugged it in and waited a few minutes but still nothing. Would resetting it do anything at all? Or removing the USB from my modem > Laptop

(Hello, and thanks )

Not sure what you mean by removing the USB from your laptop.

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

I'm using both my USB and the ethernet.. I thought that maybe thats blocking something? I'm not really used to wired connections and this is my first time using ethernet. I have no idea what to do

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

OK, you can't use USB and Ethernet at the same time, so if your PC is still connected to the modem via USB you will need to remove the USB cable.

And don't forget to reset the modem too. I've had my ps3 running direct from my modem no problems... I do find the ps3 web stuff slow as though..

Very slow, not the best interface to be honest, downloads are really slow, even for my wireless connection.

do you mean the internal TCP/ip stuff Toto?, did you try installing a PPC linux on it and seeing if that is faster, werth a play for fun perhaps.

Well, I was thinking of mucking around with an alternative O/S as it happens, thanks for that.

you dont make it clear what you mean, do you mean the VM cable modem or a wireless router , how exactly are you plugging it in, direct or through some wireless router.

your first point of connection is always going to be the supplyed cable modem (or a *DSL modem if your running on not cable BB).

VM-CM-rj45<===>rj45-PS3

VM-CM-USB<===>USB-pc2

or
VM-CM-rj45<===>WAN-port-wireless-router-LAN-port1<===>PC1

VM-CM-rj45<===>WAN-port-wireless-router-LAN-port2<===>PS3

as already said ,you cant use the virgin media modem as a router as it doesnt have the right software in its firmware, you need a totally seperate router connected as above to have both PC and PS3 pluged in and useable at the same time.

theres several options for you depending on your time spent on linux, for the advanced cutting edge speed and multimedia etc stuff, Luca (lu-Zero)is your man, with his many PPC and Altivec optimisations in several apps and gentoo
http://overlays.gentoo.org/dev/lu_zero
http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell

http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell...allGentooOnPS3

mbt being the man that makes your PPC64 liveCD and stages stage 4 is for a full install to get you going if your new ,find him on IRC gentoo PPC64
http://www.daniel.jp/joomla/info/ps3/

the guys here for other PPC code you might gain some insight from etc
http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums...er=asc&start=0

for the other less active PPC ports (very little PPC/Altivec optimisations so slower apps etc unless they take it directly from Lu's work on gentoo, he need more helpers if any readers are (PPC)coders BTW).

theres your boring and slow yellowdog
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/
and
Ubuntu for a less adventurous ride.

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

He's sorted it now.

I end up just plugging my ps3 directly into the modem. Whenever I use the WIFI my PS3 just hates my Linksys router and knocks it out, whatever channel the thing is broadcasting on. It won't even find the connection if I use a cable through the router. Weird.

Re: PS3 wired connection!?

hi grubby , is doki your other half then?.

he said the PS3s his but you say its yours so thats a sticking point

-------------

did you try temp turning off ALL security and firewall options on the router , then see if the ps3 would then connect...?, that at least would rule out some abscure security compatability in the current firmware of your/his PS3...

but then that still doesnt really explain or hint at why a direct wired to the router didnt work to me.

i assume you can plug in a second generic windows PC and it will be given a valid and working IP by the DHCP server on the router?.

what version ps3 firmware btw, the latest i assume.
