VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

i been with VM cable about 2 months now and have had download speeds ranging from 10mb to 20mb however tonight after 12 my speeds are a joke and are ranging from 350 to 1mb at the most and ping ms is in the mid hundreds so i cant download nothing whatsoever at the moment. im i the only one having these issues im in plymouth area not sure if that matters. web pages are quite slow to loads aswell
im using the cable modem supplied by vm it seems to me im being capped and throttled but how can that be right as the time is 02.25! way past the vm traffic management times and have not ever gone past the 3gb limit peak times

Thumbs down Re: VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

I had problems with my speeds and was convinced that it was my modem that was at fault but Virgin TS told me each and every time it was my PC that was at fault. In the end I BSed them and rang TS to say my modem was broken (I had unplugged it and disconected it before calling After going through all the usual crap of being asked to swap cables, restart machine etc. the kind gentleman on the other side of the world conceded that the modem was infact broken and he would have a new one sent out. Two days later the new one arrived, I installed it and called there service line to get it up and running.

My speeds were heaven (I'm on UPTO 20 meg -or thats what I pay for) with 17's and 18's as standard on my speed tests, boy was I happy.

72 hours or so later my speeds were back at 1 or 2 meg, the same as they were BEFORE the modem change WTF is going on ?

Its now 03:50 and my speed has just checked out at 527 kb/s.

Looks to me that they are heading for Chapter 11 once again.

Welcome to VirginMedia Slow band.

I have been dealing with their version of running in treacle for the last 5 months now. I was told and promised it would be fixed by the end of this week, Well they have till 12 tonight then it looking for another provider time. I just cannot understand how totally inept they are are fixing a issue of over subscription.

That is 20 meg slowband

What gets my back up is that it flip flops from one extreme to the other in the space of 10 minutes.

Nice speed for a Sunday morning NOT. The only good side of this is that i am not paying for it. However i would sooner pay BT, BE, Sky for a working service than have a non working service for free.

Re: VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

Just got a 20mb connection put in yesterday and no issues here so far, apart from that Speedtest.net doesn't seem to be too accurate in regards to the proper speed of my connection.

When I tried it yesterday, it said 10429kb/s, that was at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon.

The thing is, this is the speed I get on my Usenet account...

That's more or less a solid 2.35mb/s at 12.20pm on a Sunday afternoon, which has got to be close to the best this connection should be feasibly able to do. Yesterday, I was getting 2.35mb/s flat with no fluctuations at all.

I guess living in the "God-forsaken North" is finally paying off

Before the Virgin Media re brand NTL/Telewest's finances were not in great shape and they filed or were thinking of filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Lets remember Virgin is by no means a cash rich machine and alot of the network issues exist as they don't have the money to spend improving the network. I think the poster used the comment as a way of saying if they don't sort out their act they will be back into difficulties as people will start jumping ship !

Re: VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

im confussed as youve read ealier in this thread about my speed issues i will update you. one minute my speed is between 512 -1mb then it will be between 10 and 20 mb and sometimes in between 5mb and 10mb what the hell is going on and why the sudden drop and increase in speed im no expert when it comes to networking but im i right in saying that possibly the VM exchange is over flooded and can not cope thats why download speed is up and down like this. its a mickey take really i could get better speed with adsl even with A O hell and that saying something what are you doing Virgin at this rate you will be losing a lot of customers im getting really fed up with this.
i do no downloading peak times so i shouldnt be being capped throttled or as virgin kindly put it traffic management

Re: VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

My heart bleeds, i was getting 0.5mb for most of the weekend and i pay for the 20mb service Try playing FPS games online with that. Even my PS3 online is a joke.

I have since been intouch with a vm tech on the newsgroups who has confirmed my UBR isnt oversubscribed and i wasnt being STM'd for the entire weekend either, Engineer out on Wednesday AM to fix (hopefully).

I'm in exactly the same position. My speeds are all over the place, usually on the slow side. Weekends are a joke, the max I was getting on Sunday afternoon was 300kbs. I'm sure it's over subscription.

Re: VM cable 20mb line is now 350 to 1 mb???

of course its over subscription!!

I probably open a ticket a day on the support newsgroup and have been spun every line from them.

They even had the cheek to say my UBR was in overutilisation but is stable and isn't affecting my connection even though my speed was less than 1 Mb/s (pay for 20 Mb).

Then I posted 3 months worth of speedtests of which I did 5 day which showed my average internet speed over the last 3-4 months was less than 2.5 Mb/s despite a supposed 20 Mb. They said it was the speedtest server and it was known to be wrong.....yeh right! Now they have said it may or may not get sorted mid march but this date might change

Speedtest.net is by no means the definitive speed test, your results form there really should be taken with a pinch of salt. That's already been demonstrated by KillswitchEdge with usenet.
