You should not need the NTL disk as long as you have an ethernet port on the laptop.

It should be as easy as turning power off on the cable modem and laptop. Connect ethernet cable from cable modem to laptop. Turn power on for cable modem. Wait until the 'Ready' light is steady. Then boot up laptop.

You should then have your internet connection back. Once that is up and running, we can then talk you through setting up the wireless connection.

Errr Abs, he did mention that he was trying to put it through a wireless router, so I presume he wants to know how to set up the router.

aohna: Post the make/model of the router and also your OS, wireless card on the laptop and which NTL/VM modem it is and I'm sure that someone will then be able to help ya

I know. He also said he wanted to connect 'first through the modem and then through wireless router' Just thought it would be best to get stable connection first as he is complete beginner, then connect the router.

But of course you are correct, if he gives us details of the router and wireless card. We could go through the whole set up at once

Re: How do I rejoin Virginmedia

thanks for your time in replying to my plea, I have muddling about today and established a connection in a fashion of what you had proposed. The original post was sent from a friends machine several miles away.So your replies appeared when after I made the connection, so I got something right. The router is a Buffalo Wireless-G125* High speed. The OS. is Vista home premium, and laptop is HP. 9605.
thanks guys for all your support with this.

Re: How do I rejoin Virginmedia

The Buffalo Quick Guide is actually quite good and reasonably easy to follow.
http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/downloads/ it can be downloaded from this link if the box does not contain it.

Things usually work a lot easier if you configure the connections using ethernet cables to start with, then set up the wireless part. I have not personally set up a Buffalo router but it looks as though the majority is automatic. Make sure you you reboot your cable moden, router and computers everytime you make any connection changes. If anything goes wrong and you lose your connection, you can always revert back to how you have it set up now with the ethernet cable straight from cable modem to PC (rembering to reboot them).

Just post back if you get any problems.
