Upgrade of speed via router

I have recently upgraded to V+ and now have a modem replacing the set top box for internet connection.

I was told that my internet speed would significantly increase and finding this had not happened I contacted Virgin who confirmed it was being sent from their end and referred me to the Tech helpline.

The tech said that it was my router causing the problem as it was not allowing the speed to reach my computer.

She said to connect the cable from the modem to the back of the computer, but at that point I was physically unable to do this, and being aware of the cost of the call I asked for instructions that I could use later.

Unfortunately I was left confused by the instructions and am still unsure what I have to do after connecting the modem wire to the computer

I do not actually have a problem with the speed and am reluctant to attempt anything too drastic that may upset it all together, but feel if something extra is available I should use it!

My router is a Sweex which has always been very reliable.
(My connection I think is 1gb and should be running at 20gb.)

Thank you for any help you may give, and I apologise for the long post in my efforts to make it clear.

Re: Upgrade of speed via router

To exclude the router you need to plug the ethernet cable on the modem direct into the pc. Reboot the modem and reboot the PC.

How do you know what you connection currently is?

What model is the Sweex router?

Re: Upgrade of speed via router

The maximum connection you can get from Virgin is 20Mbits which is 2Mbytes. A wireless g router will give you a supposed connection up to 54Mbits

Re: Upgrade of speed via router

Your router supports 54meg so will not restrict your connection speed

Run a speed test to show your connection speed, theres one at the top of this page in the menu

Point your browser to http://root:root@192.168.100.1 click on Login and take a look at Operation Config. Maybe you have been put on the wrong config. 20meg should look like:
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000

It's a bit up and down but doesn't look too bad for 20meg, I've seen worse
