Changing Cable Modem
I recently upgraded to 20Meg on an offer and I was sent out a self-install pack with a new modem in. I have a ntl:home 200 modem which I think is capable of 20 meg. The sales guy said I would get about 16meg but I get between 10 and 13meg (has been as low as 2meg though at times!).
I thought I would try the VM 255 modem to see if it would give better results but when connected up I lost the net altogether. I checked the config file and it said 10meg down, 64k up; do I need to wait for the modem to be updated with right config file for it to work or is this some sort of MAC issue?
Also, I was wondering does cable broadband become more distance dependant at higher speeds, as when I was on 2 and 4 meg I always got near enough bang on the speed all the time? The green cabinet is literally metres from my house but I don't think this is the node one, thats probably about 150m away - would this affect the speed ?
Thanks

Cable broadband is only traffic dependant not distant dependant. Whereas ADSL is both

I believe you have to make a phone call to register the new modem's MAC number. There was a slip of paper in my install kit with the number to call.

Re: Changing Cable Modem
Where did you get the VM255 modem - is that the one sent to you, or was it the VM200 If you've acquired a modem from anywhere other than VM direct you will not be able to legitimately get it connected.

Re: Changing Cable Modem
He said he was sent out a self install pack.
I think you need to get your new modem's MAC registered with Virgin. I'm surprised it works at all without having done that. :|

Re: Changing Cable Modem
So is the ntl:home 200 modem capable of 20meg? Am I going to see any difference if I change to a 255 ?

Re: Changing Cable Modem
He was quoting someone else that has an older modem than that, telling HIM that he needs a new modem. You, you should be fine. I made a thread on what modems can support what, it's on the second page right now.

Re: Changing Cable Modem
the only difference between the two is the 250 is blue and has a USB port, the 255 is black and doesn't
