Ethernet connection Issues

Hi everyone it'd be great if anyone could help me.

I'm trying to set up a wireless network and to do it I need to connect my laptop to the cable modem using the ethernet cable. When I connect it though I get nothing. If I click "repair" in the status then windows tries to renew my ip but says it can't.

If I use the USB cable I can connect without any problems, but I need to use the ethernet cable.

The thing is that at our house at uni, I can connect to the virgin modem there with the ethernet cable with no problems, and set up a wireless network there without any problems.

I've tried everything I could find on this forum to fix the problem but nothing ever works.

Any help would be brilliant.

Thanks

Re: Ethernet connection Issues

You need to turn off the modem before you change from USB to Ethernet. If you are connecting to a router as well you must turn that off also.

Power on in the following order: Modem, Router, PC.

Re: Ethernet connection Issues

Hey thanks for your help.

I did what you said and it worked for a few seconds, but then disconnected again.

I tried it again and it didn't work, the ethernet light on the modem doesn't even light up now when I connect the ethernet cable.

It's frustrating because it worked with no problems on a different modem.

Have you suspected the cable? If not it could be a dodgy ethernet socket. Also, try another computer if you can.
