Gamers would very much benefit too, perhaps even shoot faster...

The upload will be higher upon release (50mbit that is ), a fair amount higher infact, but i can get told off for publically giving the actual speed out
If you want higher upload speeds for docsis1 tiers you'll have to get a business package which will soon have 20mbit down/1.5mbit up

Yes, the ones I write. You'd have to come and work for us first, although a long term ambition of mine is to provide some kind of online diagnostic tool for customers. I could fairly easily write one now that would detect your modem from your IP address and run some tests on it.

seriously BB?, i take it it would be IP based, if so, you can get some real nice looking gui's, and the scripts run on just about all popular OS , its rebol/view (carl of AmigaOS fame)based scripting, and that means small self contained and fast, plus has all the IP, TCP,UDP,and even multicast ,you might need/want
this simple GUI tool was made with Rebol/VIEW, infact its just a rebol script, he even included the windows Rebol exe with the script and wrapped it in a simple installer so you dont need to go get it yourself, very nice.

What can the SURFnet Network Detective do?
As a user, you can carry out various tests from your own PC with SURFnet Network Detective, in order to test your broadband connection. These tests relate to areas such as: - IPv4 connectivity and multicast
- IPv6 connectivity
- speed of DNS
- broadband for TCP and UDP traffic
- presence of NAT
- connection to the SURFnet network
For users who are less technically minded, there are various handy tests, such as: - What is the speed of my connection?
- Am I connected to the SURFnet network?
- Am I behind NAT?
"
give it a try and see if it suits your scripting style, and makes it easy to do what you want (if your a good coder/script writer).
you will probably need to adapt the script to the VM network and what you want to do.
BTW rebols free for personal use so you can just write the script and release it for users to install it as they please at no cost.

Re: National Broadband Outage
I tend to steer a bit clear of running stuff on customer's equipment, since it immediately incurs a massive overhead of staff, which isn't the point of the exercise
I'd see it as partly to help the customer solve issues without ringing in (which annoys people, oddly), or to identify common problems, like offset frequency or upstream congestion - we could possibly even say we were aware of the issues and planning an upgrade on date X (ideally, although this is just me speaking, with a rebate on the bill until then). If you subsequently called into the tech support centre it's not impossible to have the results of any tests you've run presented to the guy on the phone so he can see e.g. at 9pm it was rubbish, even though it's fine next morning.
There's also the sheer nerd factor of patching into our sophisticated volcano lair monitoring and diagnostic systems...

Is this definitely confirmed now? Any idea on proposed dates for general release of this upgrade to the business package?
Any hints/news appreciated.
Cheers
Ian

Re: National Broadband Outage
I heard there was STM on the 50Mb package? If there is, I think we should all boycott it until they come to their senses!

I know there is no 50Mb package currently, but the proposed 50Mb service is rumoured to have STM.

In one thread TraxData did say at first there was no STM, then later stated he was told that there was plans for STM, and that it would be similar to that of the 20Mb package, i.e. ~5-10Mbps after 3GB downloading.
