Great stuff.Iv never really had any need to decipher the detail from my PTR record for my IP address. But thats a great way to tell what im connected to.I presume you work for Virgin/NTL?

PTR cpc3-seve10-0-0-custXXX.popl.cable.ntl.com.

We often get people thinking they're in the cabinets in the street - that particular misperception is quite common on here, along with the 'I'm on Uddingston UBR' when they're actually off Uddingston hubsite, which currently has 13 UBRs!
Starts on different days in different areas, but we were outside it last night. IIRC it starts 18th/19th for this area.
I know I work for them, but the press line being put out is largely accurate and isn't trying to hide anything, although it's not going into a lot of detail (so neither will I).

Thats my point, right up to the wire for the cut off times for the network freeze.
Still when the networks techs were running around the country last night and trying to get info on this, it would have been blamed on the local network,(i know i work for them).

Er, yes, seven years behind the UBR. Used to configure them, used to write the scripts that wrote the DHCP and DNS files. My successor post-2000 merger fixed last night's mess and a bloody good job he did too. We ought to clone him.
seve is Seven Kings, East London, you're on ubr10.

Im assuming your one of those Cisco guys who`s at home sitting in a server room/data centre surrounded by patch panels and switching equipment! Thanks for the insight.Knowledge that you have i believe is invaluable. You wouldnt know any GUI based tools that can tell you sync speeds etc of the ntl:250`s? (rather than the old DOCSIS one)

Re: National Broadband Outage
you log intothe modem at http://192.168.100.1 and go into operating config
it tells you what modem config you are on with VM, 2meg, 4meg or 20meg

Yes, the ones I write. You'd have to come and work for us first, although a long term ambition of mine is to provide some kind of online diagnostic tool for customers. I could fairly easily write one now that would detect your modem from your IP address and run some tests on it.

I thought you couldnt log into the ntl:250`s? Plus the address would be a routable address not a NAT`ed one..:

You`ve lost me now.Assuming im connecting a modem directly to a pc there is no NAT involved.Where does this 192 subnet come from? Even if i go to the public IP are you saying i can still manage the modem from port 80? or simply by typing in http:// my IP address. ?

That's just a virtual address that the http config interface runs under.
