Any idea what might be causing this ?
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could suggest what the problem might be I'm having with my virgin 4meg connection. Basically, everything was fine until about 2 weeks ago and since that time I seem to be losing my internet connection almost once an hour. The modem ready and sync lights remain on but there's basically no internet connection. The Tech Support dudes appear clueless and have sent me another modem but this doesn't seem to suggest a modem problem to me and I suspect changing the modem will merely be a waste of time. Can anyone suggest what could cause such a problem, i.e. loss of internet after about an hour or so of activity. I've installed no new software on my pc nor made any configuration changes to any Windows (XP) components.
Thanks in advance.
Ian

Hmmm, changing the modem can't hurt Ian, it may sort things out even if it seems unlikely. I've had a new modem recently after a persistent connection problem and my line is back rock solid again, although my ready light was on and off more than a traffic light before the new kit. I guess the diagnosis has to start somewhere. Good luck

Check the modem settings, my download power level went from +9 to -8 after the new config file was received.

Is your ip address staying the same ,are you using a router.
From a command screen type ipconfig /all press enter and check the lease times on your ip address.

Do that and post back. To get to a command screen hit ctrl+r and type cmd [enter]. Your power levels look loud and clear.

Since my original post I've changed the modem and the lease values were as follows:
prior to changing modem:
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 15 December 2007 18:26:09
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 22 December 2007 17:38:36
since changing modem 10 mins ago:
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 15 December 2007 18:39:05
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 15 December 2007 19:39:05

Re: Any idea what might be causing this ?
Are you sure you have those the right way round?? It appears as though your IP is expiring every one hour with the new modem, whereas before you are getting a week, which I believe is much more likely. Check what you posted again. If the new one is showing the week difference, you should be free from the 1 hour network drops =)

I know what you mean about having them the wrong way round but no, that's definitely the right order. I've just tried again and now getting:
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 15 December 2007 19:09:05
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 22 December 2007 19:09:05
So, perhaps just an artifact of having literally just installed a new modem and set the new MAC ?

Is there anything in the Modem Event Log relating to the times of the disconnections?

Hmm, that's very strange. Can you copy and paste your modem logs here so we can take a look at them?
