Upgraded to 20Mb - Waiting time?

I've just upgraded my entire VM package today - upgraded to V+, got an improved phone package and upgraded the broadband from 4MB to 20MB.

The guy who installed the V+ box said the internet will be upgraded as soon as the V+ box was up and running, which was nearly 12 hours ago now. I also phoned up and Virgin said it can take from 2 to 24 hours for the upgrade to take effect. I've rebooted my (NTL 100) modem several times now and I'm still stuck on 4MB.

Just a quick question to those on the forum who have upgraded to 20MB: how long does the upgrade process usually take?

Cheers.

Re: Upgraded to 20Mb - Waiting time?

Maybe you have been upgraded but are suffering from the "Carp 20meg Syndrome" when it only runs at between 512K and 5meg during peak times?
Check your modem config to make sure and you might want to look into getting that modem changed, IIRC it was a bit iffy at 20meg and can be subject to continually losing synch.

I'll definitely agree with Mick's second point (although point 1 is not ruled out. My old NTL 100 seemed to run out of puff at around 6.5Mb, you'll def need that one upgrading if your package has gone up. AFAIK a call to BB tech support will have the charge refunded for this as in fairness it should have been spotted when you changed tiers.

Re: Upgraded to 20Mb - Waiting time?

Thanks for the fast replies people.

I've rebooted my modem, router and PC multiple times now, think I'll give up for tonight and give the tech support line a call tomorrow if it's still stuck on 4MB, but I might be stuck a while waiting for a new modem...

Hehehe r00t, 666 posts!

Anyway, do check the modem config to see if it is authorised for 20mb. If you are not sure how, go to 192.168.100.1, log in with root/root (user/pass), then go to Operation Configuration and Downstream Status.

Maximum downsteam is listed as 4096000 bps, I guess thats just a measly 4MB? Now I'll probably have to wait an age for a new modem to arrive dammit!

Re: Upgraded to 20Mb - Waiting time?

An NTL 100 modem will only do about 10meg, the engineer should have have installed a nice new shiny modem too. You need to get in touch with VM and complain.

Re: Upgraded to 20Mb - Waiting time?

Yeah I'm sorry, but you will probably need to wait for a new modem to arrive. For now, get in touch with them and tell them to upgrade you to 20Mb, so at least you can get some improvement from your 4Mb connection!

Feels like only yesterday I was upgrading to 4Mb, and now it somehow seems
insufficient.
