TCP Optimizer

I've just downloaded the TCP Optimizer from VM's help page. In the network adaptor selection box it says Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, my network is the same as above but with #2 at the end. Is it the same or should i change it to add #2 on the end? Where do you find the TCP Optimizer after rebooting the pc?

Re: TCP Optimizer

Hi MK,
the box showing the network adaptor is a drop down box and shows the adapters that are present on your PC. If there is only one then that must be the one you are using. If I was you i would download and save the TCP Optimsier file to your computer some where ie to your documents or desktop. The download should be an .exe file but will not actually install it's self. Once used to optimise your system it will just sit where ever you saved the file awaiting you to use it again at some future date. You could actually just delete the file if you wanted.

I downloaded this file yesterday and saw an imediate inprovement.

Thanks,

Gary.

Re: TCP Optimizer

Hi MK,
the file is probably in your Temp Folder within your documents. Be aware the temp folder is probably hidden. The route is c/documents and settings/YOUR COMPUTER NAME/local settings/Temp. The local settings folder is probably hidden, if so you will need to go into folder options and tick the box that says something like 'show hidden folders'.

Thanks,

Gary.

Re: TCP Optimizer

I like this bit on the download page.
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb...timisation.php

If you have optimised your PC and are still not receiving full 20Mb speeds, your cable modem might need to be replaced or there may be another issue with your connection.

They should add you're probably being STM'd or you're UBR is oversubscribed

Re: TCP Optimizer

As we know 20Mb actually goes to 20480 kbps, so when using the TCP Optimizer which has a limit of 20Mb, will it go faster than 20000kbps?

Re: TCP Optimizer

I didn't know it had a limit, then again if you're getting 20000 an extra 480k ain't worth worrying about.

Re: TCP Optimizer

The optimizer throughput setting is used to scale certain parameters accordingly - it is not an actual bandwidth setting. The main thing it influences is the RWIN setting, which needs to be big enough to allow a whole BDP (bandwith delay product) of bytes to be in transit.

The downside, an excessively large RWIN can result in higher packet drop, until the rules for increasing and decreasing the RWIN in use come into balance.
