Re: New STM rules 2008
As I see it, the main 'cons' are the reduction to 1Mb/s instead of 2Mb/s for size L & the confirmation that upload will now count towards your 'traffic score' during the peak hours.
The 'pros', imo, are it is 4-9, not 4-midnight & it will only trigger once, during that time.
Other than that it may also depend how you use your connection???
For example, it may upset P2P users more than newsgroup users??

It all boils down to this. they have to take 75% of a users bandwidth to give to someone else because they haven't got it themselves to give. Robin Hood wouldn't do this!

go and see how brown the grass in on the adsl side of the fence. VM still offer the most stable most consistantly stable speeds in the BB market today and this is from experience as a user and as a IT engineer who witnesses it for myself in the field

Only if you trigger the trap ?
- and it always has been a contended service, none of the previous incarnations of Virgin Media ever pretended they could supply full whack, to all customers, 24/7 - the difference is that this incarnation has had to do something about it.
- whatever the reason for that, and in my opinion the 'why invest now when docsis 3 is near' is one compelling argument, we have to remember that Robin Hood was self employed, not a business

You're right. we should be thankful that it's fibre optics and not copper. just imagine how great ADSL would be if they used fibre and not copper!

Meanwhile in ADSL land. (I'm NOT on virgin btw)
I'm always getting FUP'd, usually get my connection dropped to 2Mbit/s 5pm - midnight every day without fail for months.
I can still surf talk, play games so apart from having the odd moan about it
Geez you people complaining that you get STM'd for a few hours

Well wait till 2012 and 20CN its only a few years or wait,or wait for docsis 3 to stabilise the VM network which will be sooner one way or another as things are now VM is the best you can get put up with STM or use the new terms as a contract get out and find somewhere else. STM is here to stay there is a reason for it and the only power the user has is to leave or stay its upto you mate make your choice there is nothing anyone here can do about it

It is a contended service. only they're sharing it out between more people than it is supposed to be shared with. that's what STM is for, take 75% off one and give it to another.

Re: New STM rules 2008
Once again, just like months ago when all this was first introduced, we can moan and grumble and of course VM does nothing. Give them another year and they will probably tighten the belt again.
However you cut it, we DO NOT get a mature internet experience here in the UK due to tight fisted and lying ISP's and a national network that is not properly resourced.
Frankly I think we would all be better if 10mb was the national top tear for another 18 months so that infrastructural improvements could be made.

no it isnt its down to big business and government not investing capital when the architecture was implemented. BT has needed to invest billions for years and only recently started putting their hands in their pockets. VM's cable was laid years ago by different companies and to widen the pipe as it were would cost billions that it does not have . Ideally the government should invest a good whack to help strengthen the back bone but that does not happen in this country
---------- Post added at 21:20 ---------- Previous post was at 21:17 ----------
Also on another note ive been with comtel/ntl/vm for quite a number of years so new members have caused me to have to be STM . How would any of you new cable customers have liked it if when asking to have it installed VM was to say sorry mate no you will have to have adsl as we are over subscribed?? Bet you would find a forum and whine about it im sure

No they dont, IMO you dont seem to be able to grasp the concept of STM.
Greed is a funny thing, I suppose next you'll be complaining that your bank is only giving you 6.14% intrest PA because you have £2500 in your account but the guy next door who has £2510 in his account gets 7%. Its all about a tenner.

So when they say that STM is because too many people are abusing their connection resulting in others connections degrading, and this is only a problem because they have over subscribed, and that is only because they don't want to turn anyone away saying sorry mate we are over subscribed, before you go can you tell me where you got our number from? was it on the TV or the Radio or was it through the post?

Re: New STM rules 2008
I did not say thats what they are do but maybe they should??/ perhaps they should just let those who complain about BB speeds leave and make it better for those like me who actually understands why STM is needed and accepts it as a necessary evil because I actually feel I do quite well out of my connection and do not mind being shaped . But hey if VM get rid of the whiners and I do no longer need to be shaped then bonus
Contention caused by over subscribed ubrs though is bad and new customers in these areas should be turned away
