New computer and now I get 20mbit!
On my old computer I used to get 17 mbit most of the time, never really going over that. Anway I just built my new computer today and tried a download and it was a solid 20mbit! Not only did I have a nice new computer but I had full 20mbit ALL the time!
It started to get me thinking, I wonder what was making my download rate slower on the old computer.
My old computers spec:
Intel Pentium D 3.4ghz (dual core, old one though).
2gb ram
Win XP Pro
Onboard 100mbit LAN
Hard drive PATA 320 GB
(One thing that could have caused problems was that my PATA Hard drive and DVD writer were connected on the same IDE cable which could have been a factor).
New computer spec :
Intel 2.4ghz Duo Quad Core
2gb ram
Win Vista Home Premium
Onboard 100mbit LAN
Hard drive SATA II 250GB.
Make me wonder if some of the other people in here aren't getting the full 20mbit due to their system rig, rather than connection issues.

Re: New computer and now I get 20mbit!
Your old onboard LAN adaptor may well have not been set to the optimal settings, running Dr TCP on it might have helped
Enjoy your news speeds

Hi
i thought to point out that if, as you state, you have a 100Mbps lan how are you getting 266+Mbps?
You must have a Gbps lan!!!!!
I have just increased my speed by adjusting the propities settings for my lan am using XP Pro

I don't know how i'm getting these results i seem to get them twice a day usually for about 1 hour periods and my speeds are amazingly quick perhaps i've got everyone else's bandwidth , the rest of the time i have a poor 5-9mbps. wish i did have a gbps lan now that would be good (but then i would be the only person with a matching wireless router)

Re: New computer and now I get 20mbit!
It's true and the customer service people say it too, but a lot of people are way too convinced that their computers are running at optimal speed, thanks to their norton installtions... +o(

If he's using VM's connection, the maximum he'll get in 20Mbps regardless of wether the LAN is 100Mbps, or 1Gbps.

Sun, 9 Dec 2007 23:34:30 UTC
Test 1: 1024K took 5703 ms = 179.6 KB/sec, approx 1480 Kbps, 1.45 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 5719 ms = 179.1 KB/sec, approx 1476 Kbps, 1.44 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 5828 ms = 175.7 KB/sec, approx 1448 Kbps, 1.41 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 11281 ms = 181.5 KB/sec, approx 1496 Kbps, 1.46 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 1475 Kbps, 1.44 Mbps

Re: New computer and now I get 20mbit!
Hi All,
over the last couple of weeks i have had a really slow "20mb" speed, best being around 4-5 mb. Having read this post i decided to use an optimiser. http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php There is no installation and has a setting that optomises all of your settings, all you have to do is say what speed you should have (mine 20mb), and what network card you are using.(mine built in Marvel Yukon). Then just select "optimise" and restart your computer. Marvelous, tested the speed and I had 19mb and 12mb (at different times). I would recomend it to all that are having a problem, before speaking to Virgin.
thanks,
Gary
