Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
hi i have been on business broardband for about a week now after being chastised by virgin media for using my line for business, so i upgraded to keep them off my back (residential speeds terrible, another 20mb running at 1.5mb tale) so anyway, the most i have been able to get from this business line is 1.33MB/s download speed through a download manager, but speedtests and normal downloads only max out at around 250KB/s which i find horrendous considering that business users are supposed to have 'higher priority' (also the installers said something about 'putting me on a higher tap' whatever this means)
i am also having problems with my ports, as they are no longer forwarding since the new business modem and this is really getting my goat as nobody seems to know how to configure the built-in firewall on the modem (its an ntl:2050)
if anyone could help me out here i would be eternally grateful as i feel i am banging my head against a brick wall here, and it is starting to give me a really bad headache!

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
1.33MB would be about right as the top business broadband is CURRENTLY 10meg atm as far as I'm aware? As for your other problems, don't they have a free support number?

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
Sounds like your getting 10mbit fine if your reachin 1.33mb/s with a download manager.
Mainly sounds like the servers your downloading from are not capable of giving the speed required.

What an utterly idiotic place to put a firewall...

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
thanks for you'r replies! the only reason i manage to get the full 10mb through my download manager is if i set everything to the maximum allowed connections, but without it and i set 2 downloads going (a game from microsoft and a game from virgin media's own games) and i get a maximum of 350KB/s which i know is not right!
does anyone else have the business broadband that could help me configure the modem to forward ports and so I may download the odd Linux ISO via uTorrent?

You won't find a step by step for that modem but hopefully you will be able to glean enough information to work out how to proceed. The last NAT modem I had was not listed but IIRC I found what I needed on the modem under a "virtual server" page.
Otherwise if you have a software firewall installed you might be just as well off disabling the NAT completely if that is a possibility.
Good Luck.

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
Sorry Mick but that was the first site I used to try & find out what is happening, i have a few images of the options in the new modem, hopefully this should shine some light on things as I dont have any problems when the old modem is connected, only the new modem so this shows there is something amiss, it says its running in NAT mode, but there is no way to turn NAT off as far as I can see

Hmm, looks like the naffest modem interface I've ever seen, anything meaningful in the tools page?

No not really, just 2 options, 1 to reset firewall & parental settings (which Ive tried) and another option to reboot/reset modem(also done)
I noted today that on BOTH my modems downstream recieve was 10.4,(called up to tell them, but when they did the tests he said they were around 4.7 which he said was ok)which i know to be 2 high thanks to the helpful posts here, so i leveled them both to around 1.5 but now i have the same slow speeds as i do on my 20Mb modem, no higher than 2Mb
I called them up wednesday as I needed help to configure the in-built firewall so it would forward my ports but I havent heard anything back yet, thought I had a 6hour SLA with them????
so to summarise, had business broardband for around 2-3 weeks now, STILL haven't received my welcome pack or any other literature about how to use the services, business telephone line, static IP addresses or even how to access my webspace or how to register a domain name for free, still got rubbish speeds, man this company must be rolling in the cash, as i have heard they dont' like to spend money on essential upgrades but they are still willing to take the money for it, whats' going up there?
If anyone could help on this matter then i would be very, very, VERY gratefull as at the moment they are getting a total of £77 a month off me for my 2 internet lines, none of which are what they are advertised to be.

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
You said earlier that you were getting 1.33 MB/s, as B=byte, that means you were getting 10.64Mb/s (where b=bits), and that is an excellent speed for a 10Mb/s service.

yes I WAS, this was around the morning, say from around 8am till about 2pm and then the service really goes downhill, at the moment I am lucky if I can get 350KB/s the chap on the phone checked my ubr (whatever this is) and said it was upto 65% in utilisation and that he would pass this on to network planning (i think that is what he said) so hopefully i will have some answers soon

Re: Ntl:Telewest business broadband problems
uBR = universal Broadband Router.
As far as I can work out, the coax that leaves your house or place of business, first goes to a cabinet (green in our area) on the street. 'Putting you on a higher tap', is done in the cabinet, the connections at the top of the cabinet have the best signal levels.
Coax from the cabinet then goes to a small building/exchange that has a number of uBR cards which are plugged into something called a CMTS. It is from the CMTS that your data gets converted to use VM's fibre optic network.
I'm sure someone will be along momentarily (I prefer the American usage of this word!) to correct me if I've got some of the above wrong.
