I think you will find that is the norm for ADSL, It all depends on you line distance and Quality.

Put your details in HERE to find your line length and possible speed range.

For instance this is what i get

BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Warrington telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEZ] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 1.53km from the exchange (straight line distance).

Re: bt broadband

My daughter shares a BT option 3 connection with four other students and due to the distace from the exchange they only get 3.1Mb/s When I connected my laptop via wireless connection it was not slow and was a lot faster than the 20Mb/s (allegidly) connection I have with VM

Unfortunately it's not the straight line distance distance that you require but the length of the cable from the exchange to your home. This "could" be over double the straight line. We used to do a woosh test to determine the line loss and length is it still used?

Re: bt broadband

Sky use a woosh test so I would think BT do too. 1.53km straight line is probably over 2km by road. Add in external factors and any internal issues (dodgy extensions or old telephone cabling) and you line speed could plummet.
Why is this in VM internet services? Might want to throw your details into here:

Re: bt broadband

I'm over 4 km from my exchange and get 2.5 meg. They did tell me when I signed up I would get 5 though! Fair play to them I get 2.5 megs all the time and it never drops.

Re: bt broadband

It won't give me a distance from the exchange as I don't have a BT line funnily enough, looking at the map it seems I am about 200 - 300 metres away from the exchange. Perhaps that would give me a better connection than VM.
