XP Reinstall & reduced speeds

Hi

Some time ago after some very high level help from VM (involving many hours, a modem swap and some tinkering with TCP optimiser) I finally got speeds of around 18Mb and had a reasonably steady service. However, following a hard drive failure I have had to reinstall Win XP.

I saved the TCPOptimiser settings from pre HDD crash and have imported them post re-install but now I just cannot get speeds above 13Mb. At some point VM put a page on their web site re TCPOptimiser but I can't find it now and just wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of that page (not sure whether it can help me) or suggest any reason as to why my speeds have fallen.

Cheers

TCPOptimzer is available from many places, just Goggle it, spelt with a Z.

As for your reduced speed, I'd be wary of knocking yourself out trying to sort out your PC when it could possibly be VM network issues.

Re: XP Reinstall & reduced speeds

Having tried a work laptop last night and got speeds of 18/19 Mb I have now tracked the problem down to the Avast Web Shield. I had got fed up with Symantec Internet Security and decided when I re-installed to try Avast which lots of people seem to like.

If I turn off the web shield speeds go back up to 18/19Mb but turning it back on throttles the speed back to 13/14 Mb

Are there any tweaks I can make or is it a case of ditching Avast and finding an alternative

Re: XP Reinstall & reduced speeds

Does no one else have problems with Avast & Internet speeds ??

I have now tried 3 machines with Avast / Norton and AVG and it seems that whilst Avast is generally the least obtrustive it really hammers internet speeds. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas I could try or if I should just go with AVG.

You could turn off the web shield. I use Avast with just the standard and network shields enabled. This still checks and warns about any dodgy downloads or attachments.
Caveats: I'm behind a router so have that extra layer of protection and also I am an experienced surfer and mostly practise 'safe hex'.
If you habitually visit the 'warez' type sites then I guess you'd be more at risk.
