Working again here too. I'd love to know what the problem was.

The cleaner probably borrowed the socket that normally is used for the "Overseas Router- Important - Do Not Unplug" for the hoover

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
I am very concerned by this, in fact I've especially registered here just to comment on this.
I noticed sometime ago that there is intermittently a problem between VM and sites hosted by 1and1.
Through a lot of trial and error I established that the issues affects ALL oneandone sites hosted in germany, including their own site www.1and1.co.uk.
A tracert showed that network was ok between VM all the way to 1and1 in germany and then died once within their building.
Using a VM proxy always fixed the problem. But yesterday was different because a) VM had got rid of all their old proxy servers so it took a while to get the new proxy address and b) the new proxy didn't allow access to 1and1pop3 or imap email.
It also didn't help that 1and1's tech support had no free lines so I couldn't get through to them.
Today all is ok again
BUT
As a website developer I host both my own and many clients sites on 1and1. It is annoying that that periodically these sites are unavailable to VM users.
The need to use a proxy is unlikely to be known by many who will just assume that mine/a clients site is down, or worse no longer available, and may never come back ie probably a lost prospective client.
Could someone technically minded comment on the fact that a tracert went all the way to 1and1 germany (which suggests an internal 1and1 problem), yet the problem is apparently resolved by changing a VM proxy. I dont get it - is this a 1and1 or VM issue?
Thanks

PROBABLY a problem with the peerage with 1&1's ISP that VM goes through but not many others?

But I find it totally unacceptable that neither VM or 1and1 accept that this is an issue that needs investigating.

Rather than be happy it's now fixed, we should all lobby for a resolution.
Thanks

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
It didn't seem to be restricted to 1&1 tho. Alot of sites were slow, but www.skyuser.co.uk was also affected (not available from Tesco ADSL) and that seems to have a french host.

the more interesting thing about the tracert to here is that it appears to go to amsterdam on ntl/vm, then to cogent back to the uk then links up with oneandone and into germany / 1&1's DC. from a tracert elsewhere to 1&1 they peer at linx and i'm pretty sure ntl/vm do, so are cogent involved at all?

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
Popular web hosting site 1and1 was one of those hit - and its customers were not happy. But it is now clear that a routing problem at Virgin was the cause.

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
Hi guys
My 1st post here as I also registered to comment. I'm also preaty much ****ed off because of vm specially because im a webdesigner that works from home and uses 1and1 hosting. If you guys tought that yesterday was bad ... for the past 30 minutes I can hardly access any site without using a proxy. Forget about 1and1 .. I cant even go into pages inside virginmedia.com unless I use the proxie . How stupid is that ?
Virgin Media has to sort out their dns servers soon otherwise .. lots of people will leave .. I will.
Have a nice weekend guys.
Ivo

If any of you guys have the same problem and needs a fix for dns, not only http proxie you can use open dns instead of virgins dns. At least now my ftp is working.

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
Interestingly I STILL haven't had any problems here. Perrhaps it's only affecting particular parts of the country?

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
If there were still problems with access to 1&1, you'd know it, because this site is hosted there

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
It certainly was an odd problem when it happened.
All signs (traces) would indicate that we were hitting the 1+1 network ok, then sometihng was failing there, how it can be claimed that is a VM problem I'm not sure If it were a routing issue on VM's network, surely you'd not leave it and head off to 1+1?
I don't have any trace's to show what I mean now.
All ok now tho.

Re: 1and1 Internet hosting/ Virgin Media
I am guessing but is it possible that VM's proxy route simply sends traffic via a route which hits 1and1 on a different part of 1and1's network. So the problem is with 1and1 but resolves by VM sending traffic via an alternative route.
Just a guess.
Would've been be nice for VM to put some resolution detail on http://status-cable.virginmedia.com:...?ticket=604389
As usual 1and1 are blisfully unaware - but that's what happens when you offshore your tech support
