Ignorant reporting

Michael Phillips, BroadbandChoices.co.uk product director, said: “XL customers who have a top advertised speed of 20Mb actually received an average of only 7.6Mb - for which they pay £37 a month.

“Although 38.2 per cent for the XL package is still good in comparison to many ADSL providers, the big disparity between speeds advertised as ‘super-fast’ and the actual speed enjoyed can be seen across other high-speed broadband providers. For example, Sky’s 16Mb customers received only a disappointing 4.6Mb in October

Cable continued to lead ADSL in terms of speed reliability with customers enjoying an average of 52.1 per cent of their advertised speed compared to only 37.7 per cent for ADSL providers.

What he is ignorant to is the fact that cables 20Mb customers are completely different to Sky's 16Mb customers. the cable 20Mb is 20Mb and SKY's 16Mb is a speed that is the maximum they can supply to the very lucky ones, but you are more likely to be able to get around 512k to 12Mb due to it being a copper phone connection.

He has wrote that piece thinking that everyone should get 16Mb from SKY and 24Mb from Bethere and then using that ignorance to do the comparism between cable and adsl.

If he had his facts right he would see that the figures of only 52.1 percent of their advertised cable speed is actually very poor.

20mb is quite obviously not 20mb for a good deal of people who come onto this site.

Re: Ignorant reporting

its what the customer sees tho, and as the adsl prices are the same if you live 1m away or 5km away, the customer still pays for the 16mb connection. if sky can't supply 16mb to someone 5km away, why sell them a connection? why not have a lower tier, say 5mb and sell that to them at 1/3 of the cost of the 16mb?

VM cant supply 20mbit to people no matter what the distance either, perhaps they shouldnt sell them a connection as well.

Heavy downloaders dont make a difference, if they put too many customers on a UBR, and then everyone being heavy downloaders, does make a difference, but thats VM at fault, not the customers

Not many people do seem to get 20mbit, not even with STM.

they send a config file to the modem for any speed they want. the speeds they do are 2Mb 4Mb and 20Mb. what reason could there possibly be for it to be physically impossible to supply the 20Mb to someone they have sold a 20Mb connection to?

Apparently Be will not install a service for anyone further than 5.5km from their exchange. Does that count?

Yes thanks, do you ?

If you seriously think that this forum is representative of the whole VM customer base then I think you need to take a break and get some perspective. Our members only represent a small minority, and even then, a lot of members are happy with what they get. To base such a statement on just what you read here is just plain daft. So I'll ask again, on what is the statement based.

WTF?!
It was a stupid comment, when there is plenty of people complaining of not getting anywhere near the 20Mb speeds all over this forum. there is STM that prevents you from getting 20Mb even!
