Cable modem upgrade

I got my new cable modem today - Its a grubby looking small black box with altec scientifica or something on.

Inside were instructions to register the mac address with virgin media (using their premium number) Hmmmm wonder whats up with that.

My concerns are whether the new cm is better than my old surfboard 4100 (limited to 16mbps) before I decide to plug it in.

I've still not plugged it in yet. I guess what I'm asking is if this modem will go all the way to 50mbps if needed and whether or not it is exactly the same as the standard modem fitted for new customers.

Re: Cable modem upgrade

OK I've had a closer look at it...

Its a small box

Scientific Atlanta
Model Number EPC2100R2

Is it worth using or should I just stick to the surfboard SB4100 ?

PS Anyone know if it will work without having the mac registered (I guess thats a silly question)

Re: Cable modem upgrade

Obviously there was a reason why you have been sent the new modem, that VM decided it was necessary to do so. On that basis you should just get on with it and install it.

The premium rate phone number cost will get refunded.

Re: Cable modem upgrade

VM 255: Download up to 42.8Mbps
Upload up to 30.72Mbps

Sufboard 4100: Download up to 38Mbps
Upload up to 10Mbps

Webstar EPC2100R2: Download up to 55Mbps
Upload up to 30Mpbs

Your new brick has better maximum download speed and it will be ready for the 50Mbps whenever that's available

Re: Cable modem upgrade

I recently received the SA 2100 from VM and now I'm getting around 2.4MB/Sec, compared to 1.8MB/Sec with my original SA DPX100.

They had some problems activating the modem because the MAC wasn't in their system at first.

So install now!

You've got to be joking haven't you ? If VM told you to jump off a cliff you'd happily do that too ?

Re: Cable modem upgrade

Oh, I forgot to mention that the number you need to call to activate the modem isn't a premium line. Unless you get put through to get further support.

The number should be on the letter.
