What is my ip supposed to start with?

Hi, as i have numerous problems with my internet connection, meaning that i am supposed to be to 20mb and have never seen more than 13mb i start looking for anything that may be out of place. The last thing i noticed is that my ip address starts with 81.xxx.xxx.xxx . I am sure that in the past my ip has always started with 82.xxx.xxx.xxx. Is this wrong or am i looking too much into things trying to convince myself that there is a fault in my end.

I am in the Leeds area by the way if it means anything.

Do you conect through USB or Ethernet, as USB can only give upto 12mbps. A 80.xxx.xxx.xxx, is ok, you get different IP addresses every so often, via DHCP.

VM has quite a few ranges, including 81 and 82 addresses (and some others).

Re: What is my ip supposed to start with?

i am connecting through ethernet.there must be something seriously wrong with my connection as i have been calling VM tech for days and what they say is that they try to ping my modem and the ping replies are all over the place (between 30ms to 170ms). And they think that the cabling must be shot. They are replacing it this Tuesday but i doubt it will make a difference.

ip address starting digits differ depending what area your in.
on ntl 81 is def one of the ip's. not sure about the other ones
if its telewest area it should be 62,80,82 or 195

If i were you i'd replace the coaxial and ethernet cables that might make a difference and only costs a few quid.

Re: What is my ip supposed to start with?

possible replacing the eth will help, but even tho it could have an affect, i wouldnt replce the coax cable. unless youn 100% no what you're doing, but if you replace it and you ahcve any issues, a tech comes out and realises its not the one we fitted, he wont help you because its not our supplied equip.

if you're having probs with getting the speeds couple of simple things to check that might

if you're using a router, have you checked that this is able to sustain a 20meg connection? if tis direct connection, check your network card

also where is it your checking your speeds from?
if its a speedtest site, try doing a download test from gamefiles.virginmedia.com
2files at the same time, looking for it to add up to 2.4 mbps

also worth checking you modem config page on 192.168.100.1
if a power level is out of range can cause slow speeds.

and also have you checked you're pc for spyware etc?

even tried in safe mode with netowrking to see if you're speeds are improved any on there from the gamefiles website.
