newsgroups and dropped connections

Hey everyone,

I've got an issue with my cable modem. I used to a 10Mb connection and grabit with giganews worked a dream. However, since VM upgraded me to a 20Mb connection, my downloads are screwy. Grabit will start fine and download for about 20 seconds before the connection drops out completely. I can still browse the internet, but even using youtube is impossible because the CM doesn't finish downloading the content. Afte say, 10 minutes grabit will pick up again and download for about another 20 seconds before dying on my again.

Can anyone suggest anything? I'm stumped.

Thanks everyone

Re: newsgroups and dropped connections

Hi,

thanks for responding. Here's the info you wanted:

Downstream Receive Power Level: -7.2 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 37.8 dB

Upstream transmit Power Level : 51.0 dBmV

I'm not sure if it matters, but I'm in the Nottingham area

Thanks again

no problem

if you look here

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...al-levels.html

it lists the recommended power levels - your downstream power is a tad low, which may be causing the disconnections.

Unfortunately the only way to find out is to call faults & get them to investigate, which may need an engineer visit.

Re: newsgroups and dropped connections

I get similar symptoms here, usually at least half of my usenet connections are "stuck" sometimes I only have 1 or 2 active connections. I've dicovered this is 'cos my sb4100 will only go upto 14Mbps but if I set my Newsbin speed limit to 8-9Mbps then no connections hang. Like me, you probably need a new cable modem, hope you have more luck than I have.
