What new modem do you get?

Hi,

First post!

I've finally been upgraded to the 20mb service and currently have a SB4100. Have checked the VM website and they suggest I upgrade my modem, which I have done. Just wondered what the new modem will be?

First impressions of the 20mb service are so so... downloading stuff from newsgroups and already throttled! Never ever had this with the 10mb... Seems like VM don't really want you to use the service. 3GB doesn't take that long to download with this new speed so I can't really see the point of it. It's nice for about twenty minutes or so tho!

Re: What new modem do you get?

OK, glad about the ethernet only, as I think USB probably isn't as good.

Got a link for a pic?

This is the second thread you've made erroneous comments on! He wouldn't be getting a SA 2100 as that is a TV Set Top Box, he is getting a new MODEM to fix his connectivity problems on 20meg, he will be getting a VM Ambit 255 or similar.

Re: What new modem do you get?

OK fair enough, but its very unlikely as I've never seen one of these on either the ex-NTL or ex-Telewest networks? And they generally send out the Ambit 255 now?

Re: What new modem do you get?

Yeah i would agree that you would more than likely get a Ambit 255, although as Void said above, thay have been known to send these out also.

Re: What new modem do you get?

Hi,

I received a modem on Tuesday and it is the SA2100 (R2) - ex-Telewest area, so they are sending them out still...

Re: What new modem do you get?

Cool, thanks for all your replies.

I am in Wolverhampton and am ex-Telewest. So looks like I'll be getting the SA2100.

Is there any difference between connecting through USB as opposed to CAT5? I would guess that CAT5 would be better, but don't know any different.

I use a Buffalo Airstation WHR-HP-G45 wireless router to which my PC & PS3 are hardwired to, whilst my Wii and DS's connect to it wirelessly(spelling?). Does anybody know if this router supports the 20mb speeds or will I need to upgrade this aswell? I haven't yet tried connecting the PC direct to the modem to see if I get higher speeds, will have a tinker tonight.

Downloading from Giganews with Newsbin, I was getting about 15Mbps/1.9MBs...I was a bit dissapointed with that tbh, but reading through these forums has given me a few ideas to try...

Thanks again for all your help thus far

Rasc.

Re: What new modem do you get?

Hi,

I use the Bufallo Airstation WHR-HP-G45 wireless router with the 20Mb service and it's fine, the SA2100 has Ethernet as well as USB so no need to use the USB if you don't want to (I certainly don't !)

Re: What new modem do you get?

Hi Bri,

Thanks for that, I wouldn't use USB anyway, doesn't suit my configuration. I was just asking out of curiousity really.

Good to know that I won't need to upgrade the router aswell...

Cheers
