Unable to connect to internet via USB Cable Modem
Hello all.
I'm experiencing issues with my NTLworld Cable Modem connection. I'll try to keep the story short:
I had problems with my USB ports, and in a bid to fix this, last night i added the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Usb > DWORD entry DisableSelectiveSuspend and set the value to 1
I also powered down my PC, unplugged everything, and rebooted. This resolved my USB issue, but caused my internet connection to fail.
Whenever i try to access a website using either IE or Fx, i get a "page cannot be displayed" error. In my status bar from time to time i get the animated "acquiring network address" icon, which then disappears. CorrectConnect, which installed with the modem software, cannot detect a connection to the modem. In short, it seems to be the interface between my PC and the modem that is causing issues.
I've tried disabling and re-enabling the modem. I've tried re-booting the PC and modem. I've tried safely removing and then re-connecting the modem. I've tried a fresh installation using NTL's software, but get an error message saying that the modem is already in use (forgive me, i can't remember the exact error message, and i'm now at a different PC to post this).
To answer the questions set out to me on the admin's post:
So far, i haven't contacted customer support, but i intend to as soon as i get home tonight. I just thought i'd see if i could find a fix via google whilst i had web access.
I am in Leeds, using XP Home SP2. I have a cable modem connected to the PC via USB, i only have one computer, i am running a Norton firewall, and disabling seems to make no difference.
I'm obviously unable to perform any tests until i get home to my PC.
Any ideas guys?

Re: Unable to connect to internet via USB Cable Modem
If you have an Ethernet port on your computer:
1. Power down computer
2. Power down Cable Modem
3. Unplug USB cable from computer and modem
4. Plug in Ethernet to computer and modem
5. Wait 5 minutes
6. Power up Cable Modem
7. Wait until lights settle
8. Wait 5 minutes
9. Power up computer
10. Hopefully you should now have Internet access
.....hopefully.....

Should also probably have said that I can't be sure this will work. I'm hoping though that following this set of instructions will see your internet connection established by Ethernet instead of via USB. You will then be able to uninstall the USB modem drivers and that should be the end of it.....hopefully

Re: Unable to connect to internet via USB Cable Modem
Hello again.
As much as this fix has got me back connected to the internet, my connection speed seems to have been reduced quite badly. If i reverse the above process, swapping back from ethernet to USB, what's the chances that it'll work on USB again?
Cheers again guys.

Re: Unable to connect to internet via USB Cable Modem
leave the connection as Ethernet, faster and more stable. There are many issues affecting VM broadband speeds at present.
