Can anybody recommend any software (vista compatable) so I can see how much I have downloaded during the day (esp from 16:00-00)

Du meter is the one I use, spits out loads of stats and can even warn you if you reach a predetermined limit..

I have been using a free program called Netmeter 0.9.9.9.(beta2) for the last few years. Just noticed that a new version was released last month.

Any of the above would do it - I use Netmeter.
