20Meg in Portsmouth
wots going on?
for the past 5 days I'm only getting speeds of 1meg at best. Should be on 20meg. Rang CS and an Indian girl says its working fine after downloading a microsoft program as she said.
But it ain't. It slowed right down, so annoying. It takes forever for the BBC News page to open up now.

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
Exactly the same mate
I live just by the station and I'm lucky if I get 1mb in the evening's,thats if it doesn't drop down altogether. I'm sure the location won't have much to do with it, but Virgin have just booked me an engineer to check my setup as the technical help said my modem had disconnected over a 1000 times in one month, it might be worth ringing them to book an appointment, if they find a fault they credit you for the phonecall (premium line). Good luck!

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
No better in Manchester. My upload is faster than my download which has collapsed since I went on 20MB. There's only so much of this I am going to pay them for.......

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
Why on earth are people paying nearly £40 a month for those speeds?

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
Speedtest.net is not a accurate tool to gauge your speed, especially not the Maidenhead server, has to be the worst out of the lot.
i get 500k from the Maidenhead server at the moment, but when downloading from virgins FTP and Usenet i get 19MB speeds.
Nuff said!

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
Same here in Northampton on 10Mb. (No upgrade yet) according on speedtest.net. BUt when I check at Giganews there speed/traceroute reads 10Mb. Try it always very accurate.

You are wrong, when you download anything from inside virgin's own network you will always get full speeds!
Try downloading stuff outside of it during the evening... You will see the difference!

I consistently get this as well with the Faroe islands - so I guess it proves that there is nothing technically wrong with the connection, as it proves it is at least possible to achieve 20mb some of the time.

Re: 20Meg in Portsmouth
speedtest.net may not be but there is alot of problems with people being upgraded to 20 meg from 10 meg, just needs virgin to get their thumbs from out of their backsides and sort out the problems that people are experiencing. Dont remember there being any issues when they upgraded everyone to 10 meg!

Mines the same - Terrible speeds on Speedtest.net but great on giganews.
Im on 20mb and get around 17mb on giganews. Maybe its the route to the speedtest.net servers that are slow.?
Also, I believe that VM give priority to 1. Business SACM, 2. Settop Boxes and Finally 3. Res SACM. This is probaby why some people on the SACM services are finding it slow. Its all to do with the way the UBRs are set! ( So Im Told! )
