This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
Hiya
I live in Bracknell and have had a pretty much superb service from NTL/Virgin Broadband.
All of a sudden though my speeds have just gone through the floor.
I am on the 4mb service and i was always getting a steady 3900KBPS (I think its KPBS ??) but now all of a sudden i am getting less than 500.
This morning at 8.30 a.m. i even got 190.
A freind of mine who is also in bracknell is getting 3900 like i used to.
This capping business, how exactly does it work ?
Does it mean the minute i download 750mb that month, i am capped for the rest of the month between 4 and 12 or is it a daily thing ??
Thx for any help
Paul

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
Hi All,
I am the friend that Paulwilko is talking about. My speed has not been affected but I had in 3 different occasions my TV/Cable cut off for several hours (man that the most boring time in my life) ;-). On a serious note it did annoyed me the only thing I could get from virgin media is that my area Bracknell might occur problem and the enginneers are working on it.
Does anyone have the same problem either in our area or another.
Looks like that with virgin media, the service might be better (open to arguments) but the performance is getting worst.
Take care.

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
 to both of you.
its a daily thing, and is to run from 4pm to 12midnight if you trigger the throttling, also its suposed to halve both your download AND upload speed, so check your upload rate as thats a far better indicator of if its throttled at the time or not.
it looks like your problem is something else, perhaps their working on the bit of kit that your modem plugs into at the other end.
give it a few hours and see if it sorts itself out.

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
Well I'm in Earley (near Reading) and my speeds were really poor yesterday, TV and broadband even shut off at one point for about 20 minutes, then came back on but the slow speed was still there.
I'm on 10Mb and I was getting about 1.5Mb speed test from www.speedtest.net London server, I normally get full speed.
Let's just hope it's because they're about to upgrade to 20Mb (which they should be according to the schedule.)
Daniel
Edit: Speeds seem a little better now. Getting exactly 5Mb from speedtest.net. I hope this gets better.

It's daily (750 meg a day).
Also, the shaping only halves the speed on the 4Mb connection. I would recommend you phone Virgin and get someone to look at your connection, there is something else slowing it down.

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
750 meg a day? according to the email i recieved recently about how they're going to run it from july 1st is, "if your in the top 5% of downloaders" they do stats from 4pm - 12am(midnight) and then stats weekly, and i guess. work the average? if your in the top 5% of downloaders you get 'traffic shaped' between 4-12pm . . so i think i'm missing something about this 750 meg lark?
edited to mention: i was never on virgin-media as such, connected to virgin.net originally then i changed package to 'bundle one' which is upto 8mb connection, free anytime calls on virgin-talk. and a free VM Set-top box or Wireless router.

Thats for the Virgin ADSL package (which seems more fair to me)
The cable package traffic management is between 4pm and 12am, once you reach 750Mb your are 'capped' for 4 hours, so for example if you reach 750Mb at 11:30, you will be capped until 3:30am

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
:| thats crazy,
the way it was put to me for the virgin adsl package seems not to bad, i can understand there will always be those types of people who will hammer the sh*t outta newsgroups 24/7, so it only seems fair that if they're up there in the top they get shaped between those hours, i usually don't whore alot of bandwith myself during them hours, just surfing and gaming.
that cable capping lark is mental!
750 is hardly alot of bandwith imo, especially over 8 hours.

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
10/20 meg connection -> 3 gig limit (between 4PM-12PM) -> if crossed speed is 5 meg for 4 hrs
4 meg connection -> 750 meg limit (between 4PM-12PM) -> if crossed speed is 50% for 4 hrs
2meg connection -> 350 meg limit (between 4PM-12PM) -> if crossed speed is 50% for 4 hrs
or atleast thats what being said. so my question now is...
say i download like a maniac as soon as 4pm hits, get the 750 meg limit and my speed is halved to 2 megs. Then 4 hrs later my normal speed returns? by then its still 8:30 or 9...so i can download another 750 megs again between 8:30 and 12??? basically is the "750 meg counter" reset after the 4 hrs. Or is it that the 4 hr info thats been going around is just not ture, and that the cap lasts from whenever i hit 750 meg till midnight?

Yes the cap does reset itself after 4 hours, so you can download like crazy again.
But what's stopping you downloading like crazy anyway, just at 2Mb when you are shaped?

Re: This seems to dramatic for speed shaping ?
I was traffic shaped dead on 4pm last night!. How can this be fair, I thought the measurement only starts after you download more then 3gb "starting from 4pm".
